did we ever get to a list of places to go for great british food? :)

No, but aren't you fascinated to know that some nutter having a mid life crisis makes his own pizza dough and uploads his photo album on a daily basis.

Nothing wrong with the Pub and Olde Bell, Both are ok to good in my opinion. Not been to the queen Vic in ages but that used to be ok for certain things a while ago.

Most of the British restaurants that I used to like in Chiang Mai have closed or changed hands and I miss tasty British pub food every once in a while. I like Mad Dog, but am looking for something just a little more up-market.

I am not interested in the alcohol selection or how nice the guy is that runs it or owners plugging their own place. I am looking for quality British pub food like Bobby's Arms in Bangkok always had (I have not eaten there for many years). The kind of place that gatorhead would appreciate. Does a place like that exist in Chiang Mai anymore? :)

Oh for a nice Beef Wellington :D:D

Gotta be one of the shortest books ever written. :)

Longest book must be the American one, Burger King, Macdonalds, KFC all good healthy stuff !

The Queen Vic used to be good, but since Ian left its terrible, Can't think of anywhere that does great English pub grub, there are a few places that do Ok food, such as UN Irish pub. Not up to places like Black Swan n Bobbys in BKK though IMHO.

Shepherd's pie

Liver bacon & onions

Cornish pasties

Sausage rolls With puff pastry

Steak and Kidney pies

Scotch eggs

all available in my kitchen but as much as i would like to share i don't own a restaurant

Oh i would really like to make Beef stew and Dumplings but i never seen the Suet about so if any body knows where to buy i am all ears.

Toad in the Hole is an other treat but you really need an electric oven to generate the heat needed to get the batter to rise.

I am sure Mr Mad Dog could make any of these for an addition to his menu. his Breakfasts are superb.

All the above really bad for you full of saturated fats ,bad cholestrol that is what is wrong with our UK food

So are most European and North American meals. Pizzas certainly aren't good for you, and neither are hamburgers. Shepard's pie doesn't have to be full of bad cholestrol. It's basically a stew covered with pastry, and there's nothing wrong with stew if you make it with lean meat. If you stick to a Thai diet of rice and veggies you can lose weight and still be healthy, but it gets boring after a while.

Wow, your Grandaughter is beautiful!

She used to be his Grandson!

That's a low blow!

True--apologies to Ian Forbes--must be having a 'bad hair day'--oops, that could be taken the wrong way!

oxymoron ?

some brit food is o.k. right?

Better than Scottish any day. :) I mean who can honestly say they like haggis, tripe or porridge? :D

I actually like pasties depending on who does them. Fish and chips can be pretty good as well.

Actually..i think quite a lot of people like traditional Scottish food. Like Scones (potato scones and also the sweet variety), Shortbreads, Various Broths/soups, Tablet and Macaroon bars, Dumplings (sweet and savory), Scotch eggs, Crumpets, Flapjacks, Meat and Fish done in various ways (Scottish Salmon, cod, and Haddock for example), Oatmeal (Bannock) cakes/biscuits, Trifles, Sliced (Lorne) sausage, Stovies, Meatloaf..the list can go on. =]

But, erm, back on topic, sorry UG, Ive no idea where to go for British food! :D

What a wonderful experiment The Elizabethan Room was - home made English food from the Elizabethan era - but bad luck and bad timing ( and a pretty bad location) certainly put a stop to that. :)

Erm, Mrs Ricardo's recipe for Shepherd's-Pie uses cheesy/herby-mashed-potatoes, not pastry, to cover the meat-and-veggies inside. You may be thinking of beef-and-ale pie or meat-and-potato pie ?

God I'm getting hungry ... this diet is hel_l ... and it doesn't work ... where's my coat ? ! :)

Yes, I though it was very good. But unfortunately I went 5 times but it was closed on three of those occasions, even though it wasn't a day they shouldn't be closed. And the sad thing is, I took two local expats there twice and both times it was closed, so they obviously never went back.

I had similar experiences, but having such unusual items as home made scones and jams with clotted cream made the times they were operating worth remembering! :)

Mid life crisis ? . How about late life crisis? Im sure the young girls are thrilled to have their photos all over thai visa with Papa. However to the real subject of this thread. We rightly or wrongly are creatures of habit and if you grew up on English food the brain seems to retain some affection. Then again variety is the spice of life and after a few nights of Thai food I cant wait to get back to the old favourites. Is there a serious food critic alive and well in CM.If so where are their thoughts published.?

Rasseru has excellent taste in food and seems to try all of the better restaurants in Chiang Mai. Maybe he would be willing to share some insights with the rest of us? :)

(If he can find time between bashing people for spelling mistakes) :D

As a body language expert there are several factors of note here.

1. mr sexy skinny grandad is leaning into the subject

2. she is as as rigid as the boner on the pig

3. her hands are crossed over a vulnerable area = no entry

4. just noticed gramps has a base ball cap covering his but probably due to lingering affects of Viagra popped at 7am

Hope he has a sense of humor but seriously how many of us would post a pic on T.V with a young girl :)

I only post stuff to give you guys a laugh. I was obviously successful. I find it better to make fun of myself than make fun of others. I don't worry too much about body language in a single photo. I've got enough photos of all expressions to portray anything I like.

I do find it helpful to go out with a Thai woman when choosing a place to eat. They can explain to the Thai chef how I like my food prepared.

And, to get back on topic I believe the quality of pastry on some British pub meals makes a huge difference. Too many pastries taste like carboard. But, a light, flakey pastry that is slightly browned over a nice concoction of meat and veggies is as tasty as a fine T-bone steak. My mother taught me how to make pastry and I can do a pretty good job of it when I want to. But, it takes time to do it well and being single I usually don't bother unless I have guests. It's the same with making pizza dough. I usually set aside one day and make a bunch of pizza shells which I freeze for later.

Very good comeback Ian !! H Just let all the sad b*strds make stupid remarks and go on enjoying what you do .

oh come on people why should these girls object to having their pics posted ? They are only out eating some food with a friend , not exactly open leg shots ! Give the man a break .

With the number of food threads on this forum I can only surmise that most posters must look like they have just eaten half a sheep. How do you do it ? I put on weight just reading them !!

Yah, we're all real fatsos with big beer bellies after we finish stuffing ourselves. Isn't that what everyone thinks of the typical farang semi-expat?

Ian is a guy who is enjoying his "latter years" and more power to him. I feel sorry for the Pig though. has "The Pub" been mentioned yet? They have roast lamb, from New Zealand, more poor local piggy, and beef roasts, all served with boiled veges and a Yorkshire pudding. Its about as "old "British as you can get. The only thing missing is the boiled to death brussells sprouts. They sometimes have Steak and Kidney Pie,,which is to die for, depending which of the Brothers is in town.

That semi bald guy was me 40 years ago.

And, because I butcher my own meat and cook it I do have some understanding what makes a great meal.

I only post because I'm willing to share what I know with others and expect they do the same. I've learned a lot about Thailand by doing so. If I post something funny or interesting it keeps a topic at the head of the page and people with local knowledge teach us some great places to visit. I can hardly wait to get back to Chiang Mai to visit a few places mentioned here and possibly share some time with the regulars on tv.

It is my opinion that most of us came to Thailand to indulge in the very extra-curricular activities that Ian Forbes is so fond of mentioning. However, for some reason, many of us seem to think that it is now best hidden from sight and denied. I appreciate his happy, interesting posts, his positive attitude and his honesty. Mark me down on Ian's side. :)

Goat meat is considered a delicacy in many parts of the world. Where were the pics taken? Did you pack the meat and take it home or just eat the best bits ?

What about parasites etc, how did you cook it, all interesting stuff

edit
