Official statistics for tourists in Thailand show 20% decline this year, and confirm 1% drop the previous year.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports have just confirmed their latest tourism statistics for the whole country, although they are still several months behind in reporting them. They say the total number of tourists to Thailand for the first three months this year dropped to 3,6 million from 4,3 million in 2008, which is about 700,000 or about 20% less this year. February had 1,1 million tourists compared 1,5 million marking the biggest difference of 24.5%. During the three months this year, 33.9% of all tourists were European, 50.5% were Asian tourists and 15.6% were from other countries, whereas last year in the same three month period there were 26.6% European tourists, only 15.9% Asian tourists, 54.6% were others. Also they finally confirmed that the total number of tourists for the whole of last year 2008 was 14,323,221 compared to 14,464,228 in 2007, down about 0.97%. There were 3,8 million Europeans or about 26.63%, 3,9 million Asians or about 27.41%, while others were 45.96%. Unfortunately they still cannot provide the breakdown for Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi last or this year.
