Can anyone recommend a macro lens for a Canon EOS 1000D?

Tried some close-ups of insects with the stock lens which came with the camera and the results were disappointing. So seems a macro lens is needed.

The Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens is one I came across. Any good?

Thanks in advance for any info.

The 60 macro has the limitation of you need to be very close to the subject to actually get a decent macro shot. Hence it's limited to insects not running away when you're very close... Or it shines on flowers you have in a studio or jewelry or static items.

Probably the best macro lens you can get for your camera is the ef 100 f/2.8 Macro lens, you can be further away and it's good for all macro use. Price is about the same anyway, and I see above a 2nd hand is for sale.

Also note a 100 fits all Canon so if you ever upgrade to full frame, or want to sell it, the 60 is only for cropped sensor and also harder to sell 2nd hand.
