New dsrl, first shots, with this pale skies and dead leaves, I need a polarizing filter. I google a little bit and I understood I need a circular one, not so thick, and I must be ready to spend good money to get a good one.

You can easily find polarizing filters at Pantip. There are a couple of very noticeable camera shops up on..well, perhaps the 4th floor (?) with large signs facing the central part. They have them, as do others. I just purchased a high quality Hoya. I've had some that were quite cheap, others that were on the expensive side. I never noticed any difference in the lighting aspect, but a couple of the cheap ones fell apart quickly. I think they seem a bit expensive, but in terms of photography, most stuff is.

I was not overly impressed when I went in. I asked for a circular polarizing filter to replace mine which had broken. The clerk brought me a neutral density filter and told me it was the same thing...which of course it is not at all.

How are you processing the images??

I had to play with the menu settings on my Canon 40D before I was happy

with the internal processing of the camera.

I think there may be some differences within brands as well. I used to have a Hoya circular polarizer I bought in Canada, but I accidentally broke it here. I bought a replacement at Fotofile in MBK, and I've found that it tends to blow out clouds a lot more than my old one did. The definition that I want from a polarizer seems to be lost with this new filter, at least in the high light-level range. The build quality seems less on this one as well, even though is is listed as being from their "pro" line. Would Fotofile sell fakes?

I think I need to change my white balance in the camera, but I really need to read up on this more first!

I use Tiffen filters on all my lenses. Very good quality, sharp and well constructed.

Bit more expensive but worth it. Ebay really needed to get these as I've never seen them in Thailand.

Polarizer is particularly good.

I also used mostly Tiffen for years, although I thought them middle-of-the-road. Here I was rather taken aback because almost all the brands I found I was unfamiliar with.

Same as with lenses, you get what you paid for, good glass is expensive, only B+W for me

I use Kenko's, bought many years ago for B1,780 for 77mm diameter (wide, circular), but don't remember where I bought it. Kenko filters seem to be in short supply (if not so many available compared to Japan) in Thailand.
