Hi there, can anyone help me please. I would love to know what this is on the beach at Ban Tai and how long it's been there.post-75419-1247994183_thumb.jpg

That's the Nr 3 engine nacelle from Oceanic flight 815, or what's left of it...

It is a morvel, but a corroded one... :)

Its an old mookatak bbq dish belonging to the kooka kooa fishermen

from the early part of the last century, they were known for their large

appetites. This is an archaeological find, well done! :)

I will bite, Carib. What is a morvel?

I absolutely don`t have a clue what a morvel is sbk, but the sound of it is mysterious, and you being a woman fell for it... :)

On a bit more serious note, if enlarged one can see that this structure is riveted, which indicates `old technique`.

An inner and outer `hull`, kept apart by spokes. Could be for keeping something inside or keeping something out.

Think air/water.

The suggestion made by Smartiemarty about it maybe being an old navigation buoy sounds good, but not sure about it .

:) Its because you are generally a pretty believable poster, carib. Sheer strength of your personality made me believe you :D

:D ...... :) ..... blush...

I'm pretty sure it's the outer prop housing for a 1-400 class submarine.

That is a former brace for a great white pointer.

Quite a lot of rivets and the metal was thick. Either some sort of pressurized vessel, or the front end of cement mixer, like on a truck.

looks to me like an rest of an ancient (dying maybe) civilisation, means Erich von Daeniken :)

It's the bottom of a "flask" for radioactive nuclear waste (from the back end of the cycle). Notice that there is an inner drum separate from the outer one. This, in theory, is to "double protect" the contents from being released into the environment. Since the first reactor came online in 1954, it is not inconceivable that this might be quite old. Aficionados will point out that, normally, flasks are square and weigh up to 50 tons. It appears that this is an older, Soviet-era model (identifiable by the tell-tale bump in the center, used for easier handling).

Clearly it's been open for a while and there should be no danger associated with it.

Wow! What a response. Thank you. Checked a few images of navigation buoys and think that's a strong possibility. I just don't understand why it's been left on the beach ............ well, no let me rephrase that ................. we're in Thailand so that's probably why it has been left on the beach. Such a pity as it's a beautiful spot.

Just waiting for some poor unsuspecting drunken sod going for a midnight swim... :)
