Dinner Jacket For Hire?

Featured Replies

I need to attend a dinner where black tie is obligatory. I don't foresee this happening frequently. I don't want to buy a cheap and tacky looking one for probably this rare occasion, and would rather not acquire a good one for what might be very rare use - especially as my waistline and weight are moving up and down erratically these days. My old dj is of ancient vintage and far too small for my present bulk.

Those of my age will remember Moss Bros in London, where one could hire these. Is there something similar in Bangkok - for good quality/cut dj s?

Failing that can someone recommend where I might best acquire a decent dj - off the shelf or tailored?

Surely a tailor shop can knock up a better dj than a random hire suit from moss bros.

Just shop around.

Have a word with people organizing the cooking, they may be able to provide the attire to go with the fare?

Yes, I'll most probably end up doing that. What's the frequency/acceptability of white dj s in Thailand nowadays? In my time it was the norm in a tropical country. (You can guess I'm getting on.)

Intriguing idea, but can't see myself doing that.

Have done some searching and no luck from my end.

Question, do you live here or are just visiting?

If you live here, visit a tailor as mentioned and buy one. failing that visit Central Chidlom and the like for off the rack jackets.

If you are visiting, perhaps a quick call / email to your hotel's concierge can assist?

Not too long ago I checked the price for tuxes at the tailor I normally go to and the price for a new one (custom fit) was THB 12,000. I have lived here a number of years and have never heard of anyplace that rents tuxes in Bangkok. When I lived in the US, I always rented, but here if you want one, I am afraid you will have to buy it. By the way, they don't look tacky and will fit you better than what you would normally rent back home.

There are several wedding shops within the first few blocks of Thong Lor (Sukhumvit Soi 53). You might try asking them. I know in the west these sort of shops rent tuxs, not sure if they do here or not.

I appreciate the several replies trying to help. I now accept I'll have to buy a new one. I'd like to get one made and would now appreciate specific suggestions of a good tailor with access to appropriate fabrics.

OMR reckons the price at of a tailored one at 12000 bht. Would this be at the top end or average?

I had a DJ made at a tailors in BKK last year. I paid 7000 baht, and that included a made to measure dress shirt. The Label says LGILB ? DEN Champ suit of Thailand. Tel; 0-2589-1974, The shop was in Nam Wong Wan, but they also have a branch in Saphan Mai, there may be others.

I'm very happy with the suit. Hope this helps.

Around 7000 too at a tailor in MBK. But my wife agreed about the price when i wasnt around. I wouldnt have gotten it for the price if i would have negotiated i think...
