1. Are 22-24" flat screen monitors readily available in Thailand?

2. Price competitive? I can buy a 24" HD LCD Viewsonic from TigerDirect.com in the U.S. for US$240.

3. Will import duty negate any savings I might have by buying here and carrying into Thailand? I might have an overweight luggage surcharge if I carry in.

4. Tiger informs me that U.S. monitors are functional in Thailand.....unlike TV units. Any electrical system issues? Will I be able to rent DVD movies to play on this monitor?

I thank you for any info you can share with me.

The voltage here is 220 so unless it is rated 110-240 that would require a transformer - the plugs are the same so first time used without transformer it would be toast. But if rated 110-240v it would be fine. You can not play anything on a monitor - you need a DVD player/computer - if you have player (bought here) most will play any DVD. But this would not be a normal tourist item and likely draw Customs attention. They are available here but probably a little higher cost. But after paying overweight charge/customs and risk of damage believe it would not be a good idea.

If it is 110-240v. Good luck finding a hard suitcase to fit it in.

You should also keep it in it's original packaging.

I speak from a 22" Viewsonic experience. :D:)

I brought a 22" Acer from India, it wasn't cheaper but I had Rupees to use up.

In its original box, attracted only a passing comment from Green-Channel customs at Swampy, "what's in the box?", "a monitor like it says on the outside", shoved it through the x-ray, "ok, thankyou" :)

Yes 22"-24" monitors are readily available. Cost wise you can get an Acer 24" Full HD widescreen LCD for ~10.000 THB, so a little less than 2000 THB more than in the US.

There are many highly rated computer LCD monitors available in any province of Thailand. The prices can be less than USA retail or internet prices when you consider the sales tax and disposal fees in some states. In Thailand you can easily have a 5 year warranty included depending on the brand and model of LCD monitor. They pick it up from your location or you drop it off at a "drop off point", even in a small town for free factory service. The exact same highly rated LCD monitors you see at www.consumerreoports.org are often available in Thailand at a very fair price. The larger screen AOC 2219vg I recently bought in Buriram has a 5 year warranty, excellent picture quality and is made by the largest manufacturer of LCD monitors in the world. Some shops will discount any brand of monitor, even Acer, Philips, LG, or Samsung to less than USA prices for the exact same model. I paid less money for the AOC monitor in Buriram at IT Relax computer shop than any shop I priced in Pantip or Fortune IT Mall. The "chain" stores rarely sell for less than list, often more than list. Any Computer store in Thailand can order from any of the national distributors and the distributors have web sites you can see suggested prices and printed monthly catalogs, even in the small shops. Now if you already own a good set up dual voltage JBL, Creative, Klipsch, or other computer speakers in the USA they cost less in America than in Thailand for those made in China speakers. You might already own a favorite keyboard or mouse for your PC and it might frustrate you to see the same model here for more than you paid in America. Those items in your luggage will not jam your weight allotment or cause issues at customs.

You can easily contact any LCD monitor distributor in Thailand and ask what models they sell in Thailand and then you can look up the reviews on line for the exact models. Here is part of a typical e-mail reply from a distributor in Thailand:

For the quality of picture, please see the resolution fro reference, no relate with P / F / V / S

P / F / V / S are the series : P = Professional Serie

F = Fashion Serie

V = Varies Series

S = Standard Serie

# For Thailand , we have only 7 model : 1619Sw / 719Va / 917Vw / 917Fwx / 2219 Vg / 2230Fm and V22

24" we still don't import to sell in Thailand yet

Thank you

I do not know the above person, but they sent me via e-mail the information I wanted so when I went to local shops to get a firm price quote I knew what models a shop could actually order. Nothing has gone wrong on the OAC monitor or my HP monitor so I have no first hand experience on the warranty repair experience in Thailand. I know from personal experience how hard it was to get a Philips LCD monitor repaired correctly in America.

My 17" LCD HP monitor died one week after the warranty expired, the cost to fix it was 20,000 Baht. I brought a Benq 22" widescreen instead.

That was 3 years ago and its still going great.
