Tottenham fans are the best in London, says Virgin Money

Spurs fans can claim they are the capital's most dedicated supporters, after they finished above rivals Arsenal, Chelsea, Fulham and West Ham respectively in a survey

by: Philip Duncan

4 August 2009

AFTER years of promising to break into the Premier League's top four, Tottenham have finally achieved it. Arsenal managed to finish fourth, despite the threat from big spending Manchester City, but the Hammers face the drop.

Okay, so it's not the last day of the season and the final league standing this ain't.

But Spurs fans can still take some pride in being the most dedicated football fans in the capital and the second most dedicated nationally.

According to research from Virgin Money, Tottenham fans spend just under 18 hours following their side but West Ham supporters spend four hours less supporting their favourite team than their London rivals.

Chelsea fans sit just above mid-table, while Fulham supporters are caught up in a relegation dog-fight.

Grant Bather, spokesman for Virgin Money, said: "It's only 90 minutes on the day for the players but for the fans it's a lot more than just a game.

"Putting in 15.3 hours a week equates to two working days following the game and that's just the average. Some supporters are putting in a week at work and then effectively another week following football - which begs the question how much time is spent talking football at work.

"Dedicated fans invest a lot of money into the game and now we know they also invest a lot of time as well. It may be only a game but it certainly takes up a lot of time and effort."

Are Spurs fans the best in the capital? Are you an embarrassed Hammer? Let us know what you think…

Average time spent being a fan:

1. Burnley 18.1 hours

2. Tottenham 17.9 hours

3. Liverpool 17.8 hours

4. Arsenal 17.7 hours

5. Bolton 17.6 hours

6. Manchester United 17.4 hours

7. Chelsea 17.3 hours

8. Manchester City 17 hours

9. Everton 16.8 hours

10. Blackburn 16.8 hours

11. Aston Villa 16.7 hours

12. Hull 15.8 hours

13. Stoke City 15.6 hours

14. Wigan 15.1 hours

15. Birmingham 15.1 hours

16. Fulham 15 hours

17. Wolves 15 hours

18. Sunderland 14.7 hours

19. West Ham 14.7 hours

20. Portsmouth 14.6 hours

My best dedication watching Rotherham was flyng back from finland on the friday night after watching England the previous wednesday, landing in manchester very early saturday, going to sheffield by taxi to pick up an hire minibus and driving to Gosport (our hotel was there). Catch a bus to the docks, getting the ferry to portsmouth, the train into the centre then walking to fratton park to watch the Millers draw 0-0. Long day, but a great weekend.

The thing about stuff like this is....well.....it's....erm.......cr4p. Just because they spend 18 or so hours talking about their team doesn't make them dedicated. For 17 of those hours they were probably talking about how <deleted> they were last season. :D

Man U and Liverpool fans must be the most dedicated as its a fair old treck from Kent once a fortnight. :)

I didn't know it was comedy hour on the footy forum - let me get a beer and take a chair. Who's next on stage, Mike Ashley?

The most bizarre aspect about what was originally posted was in the first line: "Tottenham fans are the best in London, says Virgin Money" :D

From there on in there wasn't a single word that wasn't open to justified derision. How anyone can seriously ... :)

Nope Joe Kinnear -

Joe Kinnear claims Newcastle owner Mike Ashley offered him a two-year deal to return as manager, which he rejected as he continues to recover from surgery.

Kinnear, 62, has been sidelined since a triple heart bypass operation in February and in his absence Newcastle were relegated from the Premier League.

The problem with a survey like that is that most of the dedicated Hammers supporters do not live inside London but in the surrounding areas. This is also true about the Gooners fans, but all the rich yids live in the city.

In Braintree the town is split between the Gooners and West Ham, one half of the main street is Red and White the other half Claret and Blue, when those two play each other all hel_l breaks loose.

Braintree High Street, Blink and you'd miss it. :)

But the bulk of West Ham support always was a mixture of East London and South East Essex in the main. Although it extended down to places like Southend -- which is why Southend supporters loath West Ham. Why support a bigger club when the town has their own is the logic. Which I have some sympathy with as it goes.

But true, if you judge by the West Ham forums then it seems that the support does exist disproportionately into , e.g. Kent, etc. Although I don't think that club specific forums represent the true support which may be up to eighty per-cent clustered in Essex.

While i agree the survey is a complete load of crap, theres plenty of dedicated west ham supporters living in london, areas such as Forest gate,Stratford,Stepney,Plaistow,Manor park even out to Ilford.

Also all the rich yids i know live out of the city as a majority of there supporters do.

Why do most of the spammers come on here talking out of their a*se.
