I got a message from some good friends in the US asking me if I could help them with thai Silk for their curtains. I' not sure where to start or what the prices are for silk here (or anywhere for that fact). So I was wondering if someone on here knows a bit more than I do. Thanks in advance.

This is their message:

Do you think you can help us find fabric to make drapes for our house?

We would like to have nice silk but it is very expensive here.

I have been told you can get silk cheap in Thailand and I am curious if you could check how much the fabric would cost there.

I need 2.5 meters per curtain and 16 curtains so that is a total of 40 meters of fabric. Below are a few pics of the kind of fabric I am looking for.

i just got a price from Pasaya for nearly 90,000THB for just three curtain sets. A double door and two small windows. Almost spat my coffee over the PC monitor reading the quote! They kindly(!) offered 20% discount, and I asked for another 60. Doubt they'll answer. In need of another supplier as well methinks.

Thailand is not known for this type of silk at low prices.  The lower-priced silk leans towards different types.

Lower-priced "satiny" silk can be found in China, but the quality is not great (perhaps it is not needed to be great for curtains,) and much of it is what is called "spark silk," a synthetic material.

There are a few outlet booths at the night bazaar which may be able to help you, but the prices will not be too inexpensive.

Good quality Thai silk should cost 20,000 baht for your curtains if you don't opt for brand names (Jim Thompson, Anita etc.) However, they need to be lined too with another fabric and there's work involved in that. If you need help to source, let me know...that's what my company does.

If you can make your way to Chonnabot District in Khon Kaen you can buy direct from the villagers making Mudmee (SP) silk at some very attractive prices. If you need directions just ask.

A word of caution, Some of the silk weaves combined with dyes used make the material fire wicks. As a curtain, they can be consumed by fire very quickly. Conventional material used for curtains should have some inherent ability to resist turning into a fireball. Silk can burn fast and furious.

I used to buy lengths of silk for my mother, then she would make a dress from each.

Any of the silk shops in Silom, Suriwongse, and other tourist areas will sell by the metre.

It may not look cheap, but will be way cheaper than trying to buy back home.

I already got some contacts for my friends in US, but anyone who can help out please PM me (including a mail adress so I can forward to my friends)

Thanks again.

It is not very clear what the prices mean?

Per metre I guess, but how wide is the material?

You can get fine silks starting from about 400 baht per meter at Jim Thompson outlet center in Bangkok or Pattaya.
