Attending Broadway-style Musical In Bangkok

Featured Replies

Next week I'll be attending a production of the "Momma Mia" Broadway musical on their international tour. This is a first experience for me in Thailand.

Back home in my western country, these are generally dress-up affairs: shirt, tie, and jacket for the men, evening dress for the ladies.

What about here in Thailand? If we went dressed as we did in the West, would we be ridiculously overdressed? Will all the other farangs be in flip-flops, tank tops and shorts? :) Anyone know?

P.S. Mod, please correct "Propoer" to "proper" in the title if you get the chance! :-)

I went to the touring production of Chicago when it came to Bangkok a while back, nobody was there in shorts, tank tops and flip flops, but it wasn't so formal as needing a suit and tie plenty of Thais were wearing jeans and dressed smart casual. And given what I know about Mamma Mia you'll be expected to be up dancing by the end so you might feel a bit uncomfortable in a suit and tie anyway :D

Many thanks, Martin. Those are the cues I needed!

Update. Went to the show last Saturday.

And yes, there were farangs in shorts, tank tops, and flip-flops (mostly western women). :D

However, many of the Thais really were decked out (long evening gowns, white suits, etc.). Nice to see someone had class! :)

And my casual smart? Thanks for the tip. I felt comfortably in the middle between crass and class. :D

But no, the Broadway musical wasn't all about me and my date--it was really super! I recommend you take it in this last week if you get the chance. You'll laugh your a$$ off. A lot of new material and music beyond the movie version (if you saw that first).
