Phuket tsunami evacuation drill this morning

PHUKET CITY: -- There will be a full-scale tsunami warning and evacuation exercise in Phuket this morning starting at 10am, the National Disaster Warning Center (NDWC) has announced.

The drill, to run until 12 noon, will also be conducted in Phang-Nga, Krabi, Ranong, Trang, and Satun provinces.

This is only a drill. Warning tower alarms will go off in all participating areas.

The Phuket exercises will be jointly conducted by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office (DDPM-Phuket), Provincial Office and local administrative offices.

just heard alarms at Kata

Reminded me of the 2nd World War Air Raid and Doodle Bomb sirens.

Eerie.

I bet that scared the hel_l out of people.

Im from Hawaii and I think the sirens are amazing.

But I think there was a terrible job publicizing this drill.

I kept looking for news about it and I couldnt find it; what about the people who werent looking for it?

bad job by newspapers and government planners as far as i can tell

hope it went well though

Have they replaced the batteries in the buoy yet?

Never seen the point in drills, if everyone knows it's a drill.

so the siren works! How about replacing that battery now?

Seemed to me a bit of overkill

By the time we heard sirens for the fourth time I should think we would have been well dead, if we hadn't moved on the first

so why so many?

They were handing leaflets out on wednesday and thursday in Kata, was a bit wierd when the sirens went off and everyone started running away from the beach. Suppose anything that would help deal with it again if it ever happens is a good thing.

Those sirens are loud though! :)

dam_n drill woke me up, did people actually go to the evac places during the drill? I just check the internet and went back to sleep:).

Has anyone seen a modeling analysis of a tsunami for Phuket?

I know that Japan has done them for cities and the US has done it too.
