Bangkok To Kompong Som (sihanoukville)

Where do you catch the bus to Kompong Som, Cambodia in Bangkok?

Also, I may have a couple of days in Pattaya, and I think there's a place to catch a bus from there too.

Any further information about the travel/journey wouldn't go a-miss.

Take the bus from Mo Chit to Trat, then a mini-bus to Hat Lek to cross the border into Cham Yeam. Take a taxi to Koh Kong, hang around a while, and then take the boat for $25 to Sihanoukville. I've been this way many times, and I recommend taking the latest bus to Trat from Mo Chit. You'll get to the border at 6 a.m. or so, and must be at the pier in Koh Kong by 8 a.m. when the boat leaves. Any later, then take the mini van or spend a day in Koh Kong. Otto's is a great place to stay with good food. Also, if you'd like to ease the pain at the border, get your visa for $25 at the Cambodian embassy in Bangkok. It costs US$20, and take cash with you. If you pay in baht, you pay more. If you must get the visa into Cambodia at the border, insist on $20. The immigration officials will hem and haw, but that's what it costs so don't back down. Pick a taxi driver immediately when crossing the border, and he'll stick with you to keep the others away. They're very irritating if you choose to negotiate with many. Just pick someone who looks friendly/trustworthy. The mini vans from Koh Kong to Sihanoukville used to be a great adventure for $20 involving muddy roads and 4 ferry crossings over rivers, but I'm pretty sure the bridges over them are complete, so that's always an option if you want to see beautiful jungle. The boat trip is also an scenic trip.

Why ? It was called Kompong Som, the many times I sailed in there from Pattaya in the 70,s and it will remain Kompong Som now !
