How Far Will England Go In S Africa ?

Have just watched England versus Slovenia, and whilst not great, there were signs that with a mixture of young and old they could advance into the latter stages of the World Cup.

The last eight and with luck we could go further.

I was slightly impressed by their Barcelona type passing and keeping possession of the ball at times. Less so by their lack of concentration at the back again.

Last eight, maybe. I fancy Spain to win overall.

I think we'll do well although there is an element of luck with the WC so we'll see..

We are capable fo going all the way though, the Players ARE good enough & now they actually have a Man who can organise them the right way..

John Terry lifting that WC Trophy isn't something that fills me with enthusiasm though, Beckham no problems but Terry, not for me.

quarter-finals, where they'll be knocked out by a side capable of slowing a game down, keeping possession and dictating play. biggest thing in england's favour will be the climate, biggest thing against them will be a lack of a goalscoring centre forward. oh, and the incessant expectation, flag-waving, tub-thumping and hype that go with every tournament.

Never mind keeping possession and passing, we need to learn to take penalties :)

good point that. gerrard and lampard take them for their clubs but have missed for england. seen ashley cole and gareth barry knock good penoes before now. emile heskey hasn't the technique for them and england's two biggest gobshites, terry and rooney, haven't the testicles for them. which is before you get started on the goalkeepers.

What was that friendly that at the end it was suggested both teams have a penalty shoot-out competition and the other team agreed but Sven (was it?) said no. And guess what. England went out on penalties in competition that the friendly preceded.

However, I think Cappello more astute and aware of England's record of past and present weaknesses than not to prepare for all eventualities -- including penalty shoot-outs. But he can't rectify the fact that England just aren't good enough to reach much beyond the quarter finals, imo.

As too modern an innovation as it may be for the footballing authorities -- it still has to be said -- not if they'll have goal-line technology in place he won't. :)

Golden Balls is too old and knackered to lift it IMHO :) Maybe get into the top 8. England are missing something they have had for most major contests in the past - and thats a World Class keeper. James is even older than Beckham and the recent alternatives have been adequate, but are not in the same class as Seaman, Shilton, Clements.

Sure some other world class teams dont have world class keepers either, but they are usually not tested us much as our keepers :D

edit: winner Ghana - hey why not - it would make a good bet anyway!

Not a bad call Singhy, after all he does qualify

I've been saying it for ages, he's playing at the highest level, has now for a couple of Seasons, is getting familar with the pressure's of Football at the highest level & i think we could do & are doing, a lot worse...

I'm not comfy with Green as England Keeper & he's my Keeper & i love him so i dread to think how he's viewed by other Non West Ham England Fans... :D

Foster's gonna be out of the Team when VDS is back, Hart's nowhere & will be getting obliterated regulary this Season & will conceede A LOT of Goals, James will be probably relegated, Robinson is history hopefully & as we stand, Rob Green is England Number 1 without a doubt..

Ghana would have to be a dark horse they could hardly be a light horse :D , as for Almunia, would rather have you in goal Singhy than a Spaniard.

Good shout on the Goalie Singhy and he has said in the past that he would do it, back on topic, im one of the fanatical England supporters that think when ever we go in to a major competition that we'll win it, and Im the same again for the world cup 2010. I travelled all over the world from Euro 1996 to 2003 when I came over here, I never missed a game home or away, so for me, England to beat Spain in the final........ :D:) Let the slagging off begin......

I too have been all over the Shop following England TM, Slovakia ( Bratislava ) when the Fella got shot in teh Mcdonalds & WW3 ensued ) , Dublin in the infamous Game as a 16/17 Year old, France 98 ( Marseille/St Etienne & Lens ), Holland/Belgium, Amsterdam in the Vassell overhead Kick & lots more..

I don't however go into tournaments thinking we'll win them but.............................I honestly think that we have a genuine chance in ZA, i really believe that & the only Team that i'm worried about are the Spanish, they're a very, very, very good side..

I'd fancy us against the Brazilians under Capello, definately the Argies & any of the Europeans ( Spanish not included ) but there may be an African Country that surprises us all, mark my words.. :D

The worse game for me regarding my experience was Poland away, we had just been to Bulagria and then travelled through to poland, as soon as we arrived we were followed from the police( I think we were the first group of fans there as it was 4 days beforethe game) Then they arrested us for no reason at all, they said it was because it was for our own protection. We were let out the folowing morning, being English we went for a brekkie and a pint, within minutes Sky Sports reporters turned up and asked us where we were from etc and What do we think of our experience of Poland so far, we all burst out laughing, the worse thing abut it, they showed it on skysports and said we were just loving poland that much...........

Bratislava was the worst for me, closely followed by Marseilles for the Tunisia Game in 98..

How people didn't get cut to ribbons i'll never know as every N African looking Gentleman had a blade out it seems that day, scary & then some, worse than Italy..

Are you going to South Africa TM ??

Now that England have more Man City players in the squad, than they have probably ever had before means it's our best opportunity to win it :D

At least those players will have a chance to win something then. :)

Im planning on it yes mate, depends on the visa for the mrs, but I can't see that being a problem with it being the world cup. It depends on where they are based also, I don't fancy JO-berg again, but ive been looking on line for tours etc and its looking like I will be going. What about you mate?

Carlton Cole an England center forward you must be joking.

You missed out Kieron Dyer

I think that anything beyond the quarter-finals will be GREAT.
