Apple on Wednesday released the iPhone 3.1 software update, as predicted. Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced the update on stage at the Yerba Buena Center during the “Rock and Roll” event. The software includes a handful of new features and bug fixes.

With over 75,000 apps in the App Store, it can be difficult to find new applications. Apple’s extended its Genius media-recommendation algorithm to iPhone applications. It looks at the apps you already own and makes recommendations based on that information.

In addition iPhone 3.1 beefs up the iPhone’s ringtone capability, allowing you to download over 30,000 ringtones from major labels via a Ringtones section in the iPhone’s iTunes application. Ringtones will cost $1.29 apiece, and automatically show up in the iPhone’s Settings once they’ve been downloaded.

Also included in the iPhone OS 3.1 update are a number of iTunes 9-related features, such as support for Genius Mixes, automatically generated playlists of tracks based on your library; the ability to organize applications on your iPhone's Home screen in iTunes; new syncing options for music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and photos; and iTunes U content organization.

Furthermore, iPhone 3.1 brings with it the ability to redeem iTunes gift cards, codes, and certificates in the App Store (a feature that briefly appeared in iPhone 3.0 then later disappeared) as well as a way to view available iTunes account credits in both the App Store and iTunes Store.

Video features get a couple of new additions in 3.1 with the ability to save videos from both Mail and MMS into the Camera Roll (U.S. users will have to wait for AT&T to roll out MMS functionality on September 25 in order to use the latter). You can also now save a copy of a trimmed video clip, which avoids overriding the original clip.

On the iPhone 3GS, Voice Control is now accessible via a Bluetooth headset and there's an option to use the 3GS's Home button to activate Accessibility features.

There are a number of other enhancements and bug fixes included in the release, including a patch for an issue that could cause application icons to display incorrectly.

iPhone 3.1 is free for all iPhone and iPod touch owners will be available on Wednesday via iTunes.

BEWARE!!

One of the "enhancements" as we like to call it in newspeak is that 3.1 cripples tethering. Under 3.0, you could enable tethering very easily (and i just did 2 days ago, works very well). Under 3.1 it tells you to "contact your operator". In other words - prepare to get fleeced!

This link in german only unfortunately: http://www.heise.de/newsticker/Internet-Te.../meldung/145139

Apple web site refers to the operator. So does anyone know if this is not blocked in Thailand ?

Apple strikes again. The moral of the story: only ever install custom IPSWs. Forget about official firmware updates.

Yes, the Apple iPolice prevents us from violating our operator terms of use, all for our own good of course, thankyouverymuch.

Anyway, 3.1 also locks jailbroken phones for good, so if you use Cydia or have a jailbroken/unlocked iPhone, stay clear of this update. Word is that there is currently no way around the new locks, and experience shows that it could take a very long time until there is, e.g. months....

I'm using True's unlimited Data plan for 599 baht per month and tethering is SWEET!

Apple have also stopped signing 3.0 and 3.0.1 which means, for 3G S owners at least, if they need to restore, they can only restore to 3.1. Just how much more can this company suck?

^Yeah, but only through pwnage tools. There's no Red Sn0w at the moment for Windows users, so they have to either use someone's Mac to build custom firmware or rely on custom firmware made by other people. The latter is not an ideal solution when there's a risk of the baseband being updated. People should make sure any custom IPSWs they download are from completely trusted sources. It's interesting that the price of 3Gs running 3.0/3.0.1 (no baseband update) on ebay has jumped significantly. When I checked a couple of days ago, they were generally going for between 500-600 USD. The Dev-Team comments section at the moment reads like the Boulevard of Broken Dreams, with many who 'accidentally' updated to 3.1, or bought new phones already running it (all new phones bought from official sources will now be running 3.1) now realizing they may never be able to unlock them. The consensus seems to be that there will be no unlock for this baseband. That's not to say a future baseband won't be unlocked (this happened before, one of the previous basebands was never unlocked), but it may well be a very long wait. I don't understand why people even feel the need to update to 3.1. There are apparently some major problems with it (see here), not to mention the tethering issue you already raised. 3.0 works just fine. Stick with it is my advice.
