I'd be keen; I do a loop from here (road bike) a few times a week, home down main road to Rawai, Prom Thep, Nai Harn - love that hill - then home from there; just aiming at general fitness - and the occasional downhill race with a scooter!

How far (Km) if I can ask is approximately that loop. Only curios to see if I could get a longer ride over there than on the East Coast.

Thanks.

Good question, I use mapometer.com for running, did this course and it came out at 24.95km from my place, so let's say a little over 20 if you start/finish on south side of roundabout. I'm on lower slope of Big Buddha hill which adds a few km, from home I go thru the Chalong roundabout which is an experience in itself, then straight to Nai Harn, up the incline to Prom Thep, a good downhill then a mean uphill to the wind turbine, down to Nai Harn - I usually divert to check the surf - then across and join the main Rawai-Chalong road about 1.5km south of the roundabout.

Apart from the two hills it is fairly flat; the roundabout is probably the most dangerous place other than that it's a clear ride, I don't really push it and have learnt to be more aware of trafffic in my super-fluoro singlet, scooter riders are often unaware of just how fast a road bike can go and I keep my distance unless overtaking - the long slow downhill towards Rawai is good for this - top gear and just go for it for 2km, get round the corner and recover!

On the subject of cycling, tonight have replaced my Specialized Armadillo http://www.specialized.com/nz/en/bc/SBCEqP....jsp?spid=41625 tyres with standard ones; couldn't locate them here. I am very impressed - worn out a set without a single puncture which is a great advertisement for their kevlar belts considering the state of the roads here. And I had the back down to the red warning stripe, these really are good, be interested if anyone has tried them or another brand with kevlar. If anyone has seen them for sale here please let me know, have a friend visiting in November and I'll ask her to bring a set over, but I'd prefer to have them sooner, i am the world's worst tyre/tube replacer.

I try not to clock-watch, or pay attention to distance . . . can be a bit obsessive about such things

curses!

now I know the distance I just had to time the ride; did the return trip from home in a little under 50min; will never get the 'perfct' run, roundabout sees to that, plus blocked for a couple of kms by a truck loaded with Burmese workers (they gave me a cheer when i finally overtook them)

And an error in my earlier post, my Specialized tyres are not kevlar belted, must have dreamt that one, it is (from their website):

Our proprietary armored Armadillo casing uses a multiplelayer nylon casing that runs from bead to bead, virtually eliminating the risk of punctures from thorns, glass and sharp-edged rocks. It's the most reliable security you can get for your tires, period.

Hello Mate.

I have just read your forum chat, and would like to join you if possible for some of those loops around Nai Harn.

I have just moved to Chalong and I am in the process of getting a bike for over here. I regularly ride at home in England and look forward to starting up here. Do you have a suggestions regarding bike shops or the best way to buy a bike. I haven't too much to spend around 25k baht a little more or less. Know anyone who might have something for sale? I ride a medium 54cm frame.

Cheers

Well with the 50min or so used on the course you mentioned tells an old rider that you are in another league :)

I guess it takes me 50min on the motorbike.. :D

Specialized Armadillo

They seem to be great tires.....unfortunately have I not seen them at the bike dealer in Thalang, but that not mean he not can get them!

BTW, do you or anyone know something about the new dealer, also located in Thalang, big Cannondale sign over the entrance...on the right side of the road when you drive North.

Thanks :D

The new Cannondale shop in Thalang is run by a lovely Thai lady who speaks good English.

It caters more for Mountain Bikes but she has a good stock of most things. She doesn't have as much stock as Thalang Bike but she's a heck of a lot nicer to deal with.

Can you give me the location to the bike shops in Talang? do they have clothing stock there coz down in Rawai can get nothing and people always asking me where there is a good bike shop, don't tell me that one in Kata it's never opened been there myself on more than one occasion closed, my friends also.

If you're coming up from down south then go straight through Thalang main intersection (lights) heading north, about 500m up on left ( about 100m before bridge over the road) is Thalang Bike. Big sign outside

Then do a u turn and back down the road on the left probs about 400m is Cannondale ( just before lights and practically opposite the Seven Eleven ). Big sign above Cannondale shop, you cannot miss it.

They both have clothing but it's not that great so don't get your hopes up

hi; welcome! twisted my ankle downhill running (Big Buddha hill, too steep) and this morning my first ride since 16th, stick to cycling for a while gentler on the legs. Today's effort a 54min, I hold last nights Heinekens to blame for the extra minutes.

I brought my bike back with me on my last trip to NZ, only cycle shop I've dealt with here was Siam rentals on the way towards Kata/Karon over the hill on the left, and that was just for tyres so can't comment further. They had frames int he window unsure what it would cost here to get one built for you

I'm away next weekend - helping with the lifeguard carnival at Patong, but not working the following week or weekend; send a pm happy to catch up somwhere round Chalong

cheers
