Saving us I am not sure on at all. It seems to me that he is about to get us involved in yet another war in the Middle East with Iran. Anyone here think different?

i do.

I do to. There's just no money for it, even if the will is there. Besides, thngs may collapse of their own accord and alliances may be formed with a new regime.

War isn't the economic engine it once was. No mass employment to be had, just profiteering by smaller and smaller groups of investors who are increasingly global.

War with Iran will never happen under Obama. I have serious doubts he would even authorize a counter-strike.

His tail will remain safely tucked under for the duration.

counterstrike? what counterstrike? :)

No, it's not all about patronising those who finance the government by calling them 'the ignorant masses' and assuming that you're more qualified to spend their money than they are. The 'ignorant masses' ARE the country.

The ignorant masses, "the great unwashed" ARE a significant part of the country.

The "bright representatives" ARE more qualified, by definition.

Is it patronising if the patronisee is unaware that he's being patronised?

The 'bright representatives' are more qualified by whose definition? Their own, maybe. When they pay all the bills they can pull all the strings. Until then they ought to be reminded on a regular and vigorous basis just who they work for.

Considering that I'm a member of the 'great unwashed' in the UK and that the 'bright representatives' have spent the last few years screwing us for all we're worth we patronisees are very well aware that we've been patronised. We're also well aware that the 'bright representatives' seem to think that our main function is to finance their indulgences. Well excuse me - if your moat needs cleaning - clean it yourself.

You've missed the point entirely. Nobody, least of all you or me, thinks the current leaders are the "bright reps", and I'm fairly certain you are not part of the ignorant masses albeit you may indeed be part of the great unwashed :).

I thought we were discussing the hypothetical situation whereby those in power, and those electing them, have to qualify intelectually.

Is it patronising if the patronisee is unaware that he's being patronised? I'm suggesting, for the ignorant masses, ignorance is bliss.

That's the way that Thailand is run. Keep them thick, keep them stupid, keep them in the fields. 'Faces to the mud - backs to the sky'. Far better for the country as a whole as well as for individuals to remove that ignorance by education unless you think that a country full of compliant drones is a good thing.

There's a huge advantage to the country if there are hordes of compliant drones.

If ignorance is bliss, and the compliant drones are ignorant and blissfull, why educate them to become unsatisfied, covetous, unhappy, slum-dwelling potential pickpockets and disease carriers?

There's no need to feel guilty that there are peons growing your food. You give them a good welfare sytem so that they never starve, good medical treatment so they are not in pain, and law and order....and the wheels of the country as a whole keep spinning.

There's a short term advantage to a country to have a majority of uneducated serfs. It doesn't last and it usually ends in violence. The countries which succeed are the countries which inspire their citizens to achieve personal goals.

I believe every Australian should be inspired by law to kill 20 flies a day.

Bankokians could do something similar with tuktuk drivers.

Of course he will succeed, how could he not.

A group of people are already praying to him," O hear my prayer Obama". Of course the person leading that prayer is now in his administration. But if Obama is god, whats all the debate over health care. Why can't he just raise his hand and shout out "be healed", save a lota tax money.

School children are being taught songs in praise of the many great things he done.

Lets not pay attention to the President of France who called him naive and a pantywaist after all he and the UK PM were miffed because Obama wouldn't dress down the Pres of Iran when Obama spoke to the security council as it would interfer with his can't we all get along and give up our nukes speech.

I will give Obama credit for one thing. During his campaign he promised to have the most transparent administration ever.

He succeeded beyond his wildest expectations.

We can see right through him.

Nobel Peace Prize!
Is the award taxable?

Not if his Treasury Secretary does his tax returns.

Its not the most undeserved award ever granted. After all, Henry Kissinger also received the Nobel Peace Prize. And Schicklgruber was Time's Man of the Year in 1939.

What has he done? What has Obama actually done?

What has Obama actually done to merit the Nobel Peace Prize this early in his administration? Besides talking.

Well he did pay the US' tab at the UN. But other than that, he has done nothing to merit this award, except for talking a good game. And so, he cheapens it.

Does go well with his other feats though as shown on SNL

Sounds like he's giving it to charity.

That is odd since charity obviously gave it to him :)

Myth: The prize is awarded to recognize efforts for peace, human rights and democracy only after they have proven successful.

Fact: More often, the prize is awarded to encourage those who receive it to see the effort through, sometimes at critical moments.

Shimon Peres was awarded it too.... Now THERE'S an anomaly, awarding the Peace Prize to an Isreali Foreign Minister!

The Nobel Prize will certainly provide an incentive to BO to follow through with his stated intentions of promoting peace and harmony in the world.

30,000 raping, butchering American occupational troops later.... :)

Great speech by Obama by the way. Explained to the Euros and the world that peace doesn't just grow on trees - sometimes it takes war and for people to be free first and usually with the Americans there to provide security for the nations who wish to remain "peaceful".

Arafat getting one.... well, he was a freedom fighter, just like Mandela, another recipient.

30,000 raping butchers? You said it, not me. I would not have been nearly so broad as to put such a number on it.

raping butchers is what you and your friends like Peaceblondie think of the American troops. Well, you never replied against him so I take it you and the others agree.

In the Afghanistan thread, you accused your debating opponants of making assumptions and wild claims..... I suggest that stating what PB and I think is a HUGE assumption...or are you psychic?

"....so I take it ....". An assumption, once again.

Whom, I? :)

I love enemies because I'm ordered to do so by a Commander Who outranks all generals and heads of state. War is sin for everybody. I'm not anti-American. I'm anti-war. If they're raping butchers, I'm opposed to rapings and butcherings no matter who does it.

PB said it. I don't need to assume that. As for you, I notice you didn't deny it in your post. Says it all.

Silly and illogical.

Do you really think that in not denying something, one agrees with it?

I find you are really are not worthy of debating with.

PeaceBlondie:

It is all fine and good to turn your cheek, love your enemies and sing Kumbaya around the campfire.

What do you do when the rapists and butchers are the bad guys, wearing the black hats and doing evil?

Do you sing lullabies to them, appeal to their sensibilities and try to get them to change their way of life?

How would you have handled the assault in Mumbai, for instance?

Just curious to see how your system might work in real life.

You love them. The dominant world order has castrated those words, "love your enemy." Pacifist means peacemaker, not pussywhipped spineless coward. All schools preach a religious-sounding but immoral sermon that violence redeems. Popular culture tells us that the only way to deal with your enemy is to treat them like dirty mother-rapists. No! Love your enemy! Make justice! Put your carcass out in front of the executioner. Get in the way of injustice, even if it kills you. What have you done tonight, for the causes that you believe in? Gandhi loved his enemy, and freed a sub-continent. MLK Jr. loved his enemy, and freed 30 million. You have to have millions loving their enemies with good works for centuries instead of teaching coutless generations to hate and kill. The only The only results that God wants is our obedience.

Let me get this straight.

You would have somehow told the Mumbai attackers that you loved them and they should lay down their arms and join you in prayer?

Do I have that about right?

I think that approach would have made you victim number 175.

It is apparant you have managed to avoid any areas of conflict in your lifetime. Otherwise you wouldn't be here to share your Christian beliefs with all us "pussywhipped spineless cowards".

Did I call you a coward? I said pacifists aren't cowards. One day on a Mexican army base, I told a two-star general that the Christian pacifist Mayan girl at our feet was braver than his army soldiers, who hid behind their guns which were used to kill her friends. Then we ordered him to resign because he was a Christian.

Conflict is easier for lovers to avoid, even when working to make peace in a conflict zone. Try peace - it's far better. Thanks for listening.

What happened next? Was the 2 star general overwhelmed by your words and resigned or did he just have the girl shot? What were you doing on a Mexican army base in the first place?

PB, I can empathise with pacifism: It's IS terrible to see wanton killing, and I'm not a Christian, so I feel it from a humanitarian, rather than religious position.

One thing makes me not a wholehearted pacifist, per se, and that is that competition is natural. Untimely death is natural (don't pick on the oxymoron). Survival instinct is natural.

If a burglar sneaks into my home, he WILL get his lights knocked out by me.

If (as has happened) a would-be rapist tries it on with my daughter, he WILL be bloodied and bruised (and was :) ).

If any country invades mine, I WILL take up arms.

In the words of Kenny Rogers.....

Everyone considered him the coward of the county

he’d never stood one single time to prove the county wrong

his mama named him Tommy, but folks just called him Yellow

something always told me they were reading Tommy wrong

He was only ten years old when his daddy died in prison

I looked after Tommy, ´cause he was by brother’s son

I still recall the final words my brother said to Tommy

„son, my life is over, but yours has just begun“

CHORUSPromise me son not to do the things I’ve done

walk away from trouble if you can

it won’t mean you’re weak if you turn the other cheek

I hope, you’re old enough to understand

son, you don’t have to fight to be a man

There’s someone for everyone, and Tommy’s love was Becky

in her arms he didn’t have to prove he was a man

one day while he was working, the Gatlin boys came calling

they took turns at Becky (there was three of them)

Tommy opened the door and saw his Becky crying

The torn dress, the shattered look was more than he could stand

he reached above the fireplace and took down his daddy‘s picture

as his tears fell on his daddy’s face, he heard this word again

CHORUS

The Gatlin boys just laughed at him when he walked into the bar room

one of them got up and met him half way cross the floor

when Tommy turned around they said „hey look old Yellow’s leaving“

but you could’ve heard a pin drop when Tommy stopped and locked the door

Twenty years of crawling were bottled up inside him

he would hold nothing back - - he let ‘em have it all

when Tommy left the bar room, not a Gatlin boy was standing

he said „this one‘s for Becky“, as he watched the last one fall

(now hear him say)

„I promised you dad not to do the things you’ve done

I walk away from trouble when I can

now please don’t think I’m weak I didn’t turn the other cheek

and papa I should hope you understand

sometimes you gotta fight when you’re a man“

Everyone considered him the coward of the county
