I am thinking about a trip back to Thailand with my Son & daughter. Probably going to include Phuket for a few days.

I first went to Phuket in '94 and again several years later but its been a long time since ive been there.

I remember when i stayed in Kata that when walking from Kata and into Karon(down the hill) that there were some Bungalows on the right hand side at the bottom of the hill,i guess they would be in Karon. Conversely, if travelling out of Karon towards kata, then just before you leave Karon and go up the hill towards Kata the place would be on the left hand side at the foot of the hill. Can't really give any more details as this was a long long time ago, just fancied staying there,no rhyme or reason to it.

If anyone knows the place i mean, i would like to know:

1. If it is still there and the name of the place

2. The prices and/or their website with some info.

3. Any opinions on the place from people that have stayed there,or know of people who have.

I will probably need a few ideas on where to stay on a low/medium budget in Kata/Karon and maybe i will consider Patong, if only for the beach. I will do a search and see what i can find but any info is more than welcome, thanks in advance.

Hi

I suspect that you are either referring to the Tropicana Bungalows (the 1 with Otto the pig) or the old thatched ones that used to be located in front closer to the street. Either way these were pulled down years ago. The owners of The Tropicana bungalows subsequently moved their operation to Khao Lak and sadly died in the Tsunami. If you knew this family feel welcome to PM me for updates as they were quite an institution in those days.

The Kata Villas that Livinginkata referred to have only opened up around 2003 and are worth it if you are looking for good value for money. You can check them out at www.katavilla.com

Thanks for that, i will look at the site for Kata Villas.

As for the bungalows, i think that they were thatched, right on the main road and extending further back, so i guess it was probably them that i was talking about.

I had a quick look around and The Phuket Island View Hotel, near Luangphochuain Rd(on google map) at the southern end of Karon, looks pretty good value and location and their rates drop to 1050 baht on april 1st and thats the time i will be coming, whereas Kata Villa are 1200 bt,not dropping to 500 bt until may.

Phuket Island View looks superior to Kata Villa tbh, anyone stayed there or know anything about the place?

Yes, I would say that Island View is much superior to Kata Villa. Kata Villa is budget apartment style and Island View is hotel standard. But the price of Villa should be quite a bit cheaper that Island.

Well LIK, generally it is, Kata Villa is 500 bt in low season compared to 1050 baht for Island View BUT Kata villas low season price doesn't start until May and before that their rates are 1200 baht, where as Island views low season rates start April 1st, dropping to 1050 baht from a much higher rate. As im coming beg April, Island view looks like the better bet, especially with the kids in tow.

Kata Villa is the sort of place that i would have been happy to stay in when i was single many moons ago, i have certainly stayed in places a lot worse than that in the past.
