What area of town should I be looking for a medium sized serviced 1 bedroom apartment in the USD $300 a month range? Transportation and proximity to a good shopping market would be high on my list…… In general what’s a good neighborhood to live in?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder....

What you may like, others may not.... Have you been to or visited CM before? If you haven't the last thing I would do is jump right into an apartment or other form of semi permanent accommodations. If you plan on living in CM for a while, come visit and check out the areas for your likes. There are many good and economical guesthouses around the various parts of the city. When you think that you have found an area that you like, then repost and see what the members of this forum think of your choice, the plusses and minus'

Also when are you planning to arrive..... seasonal rent factors may enter into the program

Good Luck and welcome to Chiang Mai

Gonzo gave you the only advice you need. You can quickly find a reasonable hotel on line for a 3-7 days stay while you look for a longer term hotel/guest house. Once you have situated yourself for the "long near term", you can search CNX at your leisure and decide where and how you want to live.

And if you are only going to be a month or so, the advice still is good.

Maybe try Veerachai Court to start. Cable TV and air con. Right in the middle of everything. All kinds of different prices.

Or Top North Guest House, Mueng Mung Soy 2, while you look.

Rooms are a little bit tired, but the swimming pool and patio area make up for that.

The best long term places usually require a 3 month minimum.

I rather like the Royal Lanna Hotel at the top of Loi Kroh Road (night bazaar) that does a really nice 1 bed apt for 11,000bht a month. (but daily costs 1200bht a night)

Maybe the 2000 baht a month ones? Not the nicer ones. Veerachai is a bit of a scene. I know, I stayed there once in a previous life. :) But it IS well run and in a central location, and probably a reasonable bet for the money. Specially if you're a bit of a 'monger. :D
