Got Busted For A Bad Parking Job

Featured Replies

I unwittingly parked too near a corner, where a motocy cop was working. Came back 5 minutes later and my p.u.truck was chained. I made some feeble attempt for mercy, but the cop was all business. He had me get on the back of his motorbike, all the while admonishing me 'this Thailand, no good park bad.' - and mentioning the fine would be Bt.2,000. We got to the station and sat down with another cop, now three of us. They asked how much I would pay. I offered 500 baht. My cop said 'I help you' and let me go for Bt.200.

On the ride back, I asked if he had a key for the padlock. He then made an immediate illegal U-turn, pulled in a drive, stopped his bike by an attractive young woman who was getting ready to start her motorbike, plucked her keys from her (didn't remove just the key he needed) and took off with me, ...all without saying a word. The look on the girl's face was priceless.

Altogether, reinforced my thinking that Chiang Rai cops are ok - at least the ones I've interacted with.

Chiang Rai Police seem to be fair. The 200 Baht fine was reasonable. In Phuket or Pattaya god only knows what the final payment would have been. I have had good experiences with Chiang Rai Pollice.

Where was this brahmburgers? My parking tends to be a bit creative, particularly around the central market area.

I'll have to start watching that, I hate paying fines of any kind or amount.

As you probably know, parking fines are rather rare in C.Rai. The busiest place for chaining vehicles is in the vicinity of the main police station. It figures, the guys are told to write tickets, so they walk out of their station and start going to work. The 2nd most vulnerable is a conglomeration of the places which are designated one way during afternoons, which are in various places downtown, usually near schools/colleges.

they did me for turning left at red traffic lights, which is the norm in chaing mai.then a few hours later at same lights traffic cop waved me on.grrrrrrrrr

The first time I drove in Chiang Rai my wife told me that a left turn at a red light is legal accept when there is a policeman watching.
