I heard it's bad luck to start a poll on Thursdays.

That's only if you start one about Fridays. Far better to start one about the day before once you know the results.

I was always lead to believe that a bird shitting on your head was good luck. In any case its better that one plopping in your open mouth, that would be bad luck.

I believe that you will find that not only is superstition linked to the closing of barber shops on Wednesdays, but also a power saving campaign which was instituted by the gov't donkeys of years ago. I have heard, but cannot confirm, that barber shops often used bright signs and neon lights to advertise (as did places of entertainment) and it was decided that to reduce power usage in a time hardship for the country that all neon and bright signs would have to be turned off every Wednesday to save energy. When the hardship passed it was back to bright lights and neon as usual for all except barber shops, which remained closed on Wednesdays.
