Cannot understand why people will post a great deal here in Thailand then give the price in $.... Have never seen any place here take $ ? or anything priced in $.. Yet people post every week with things in $ here... :)

Cannot post on one this morning re great deal with Air Asia... BKK to Vietnam for 400$........ is that 400 baht? or what is 400$ ? cannot be 400 US $ ? as in Thai Baht it is 1,740 baht on Air Asia web site. maybe I'm to old to work it out ? what is $.. US? AU $? HK $? Sing $?

When I left the UK in 2003 I used Thai baht from then on. have no idea or have any interest in what things cost here in GBP... I live in Thailand and if I want it then I pay in Thai baht.

You get posts about computers, computer parts bought here, car, car parts, hotels, travel, all bought here but priced in $ ??

Most people here use Thai baht, so why must some people use a currency not used here?

It's no big deal. When I lived in Lao we used to talk about prices in Kip, baht or dollars, depending on how much it was.

Used to impress the tourists no end and make us look like old Asia hands.

Yes sure, but in Lao everyone understands the the $ means US currency..

Here you have no idea if it is a Australian posting talking about AU $. or if it is a person from the US talking about US $.

also other Countries use the $ sign....

Have been caught out there is over 3,000 baht difference on 1,000 $, and not being a mind reader have no idea what $ is been talked about.

Perhaps because the dollar has traditionally been the world standard since there is no world wide currency?

Plus most everyone I've ever met knows pretty well the exchange rate between their country's currency and the USD....

Bookmark a currency converter into your PC. This is what I do, since the baht against the dollar,or the pound against the baht etc. etc. changes, even if it is ever so slightly. Hope I was able to ease some of your frustration. :)

Sometimes someone speaks in $ or € or other currencies than Bath, but I have never seen someone complaining about that. It does not make me upset too.

OP, I think to be more effective you have to let your frustration be known instantly when you read that. Ok, cigarette?

I understand what you are saying, Ignis, it can be confusing. I try to convert if I'm posting on a Thai forum. The dollar can vary all over the place. I'm currently in the Cayman Islands where an American dollar is worth 80 cents. But, items are priced same and consequently cost 20 percent more. A Canadian dollar is worth 94 cents American. I get about 31 baht for a Canadian dollar. It really depends on what the price of the same item is in different countries. When I'm in Canada and I'm telling friends what the costs are I tell them in Canadian dollars. For example, my hotel room in Chiang Mai is about 6500 baht for a month, but a similar room in Phuket or Bangkok is much more. I just tell my Canadian friends I can rent a nice room for about $200 a month.
