Hi folks

What's the availability of used cars for sale on the island?

I'll be over in December and staying for a year upwards. I usually rent a jeep if I'm over for a month or so but obviously long term a used jeep or car would be better value.

Moped best value of all admittedly but I'd rather not go down that route for safety reasons.

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers

Somchai

I've seen a lot of public 'auctions' held on reposition auto's & motorcycles in Thailand. This may be an option to look into.

There are many autos and motobikes in good condition at bargin prices. Beware at times at a second hand car lot, there can be cars that have been stolen and the documents forged.

What island are you talking about? If Phuket there are usually several Suzuki Samurai/Caribean available, current price for such seems about 100-130k baht. Perfect for local travel, particularly now that many of the lesser roads are potholed after the rains.

Go to this website, they have thousands of second hand cars from all over thailand, i think the best to look for the best car u find and go get it in bkk. 20-30% cheaper than in the island.

www.onetwocar.com

its thai site but easy to navigate on the right side u choose the brand and model and then the most info ok to understand for a foreigner as well...

samui is a very good place to buy second hand cars and motorbike, we went in surat, prices are awfully expensive for second hand, all the vehicules are more expensive than in samui, we met two thai guys buying cars in samui to sell them to surat.

second hand vehicules don't lose a lot of their value like in europe thus explaining the high prices.

This is true but you have to be soooo careful here of what you are buying. I would'nt buy a second hand vehicle here without it being fully checked by a "foreign" mechanic.

you're absolutely right, i performed a complete check including brakes, dampers and engine at dan auto for 400 baht, even if the car was in his neighbourhood he came with a bad diagnostic so we didn't buy the car.

Just one more question folks.

Will my UK driving license suffice for driving in Samui as it does for a rental car or would I need to apply for an international license?

I would advise International.

Your English license plus a couple of those brown ones in your wallet would satisfy the Police but maybe not the Insurance Company in case of an accident.

You need an international licence with a UK licence which is only valid for 3 consecutive months, not a year. It's easy and fast enough to get a Thai licence, without undergoing a test, if you hold an international licence. Check the motoring forum

Your English license will sufice in a routine check, but in the case of an accident you would be an aweful lot better off with an international one

On what bases did you make your statement? A cheapie would be? Where to sell on Samui for a profit?

A friend bought a 2nd hand car 3 months ago on Samui for a very good price. Is it possible the prices came down (because of no buyers) or was he just lucky?

What did he buy?

Vitara, no problem yet after 3 months, so it seems OK.

you have to take the vechile to the transport office anyway before u buy. so i am sure that they would spot a forgue. if u don't go to the transport office to buy your car or motor bike. don't buy it or it will not be registeered in your name.

some poeple i know have bought bikes and car without the transfer and it has been bought and sold up to 5 times. very hard to trace the owner after that.

also with a name like Somchai ( are u Thai )
