I currently have a multi-entry Non-Immigrant "O" visa based on marriage that expires on January 12, 2010. My current 3 month entry stamp expires December 26th, 2009. This year I have been going up to Mae Sai to get my stamp every 3 months. I would like to apply for the year extension and report to a local office instead of going to a border. Would someone please confirm the requirements below? I will be going to the Chiang Mai Immigration office.

1. Marriage Certificate - we were married in the U.S. and I have an original certificate, certified translation, legalized affidavit of marriage from embassy, and stamped document from Ministry of Foreign Affairs legalizing the marriage in Thailand

2. Wife's ID card

3. Household Registration Book

4. My passport

5. Will go to embassy to get letter that shows my proof of income of 40,000baht/month

6. Map showing how to get to our house.

7. Photos of us at the house.

When should I go to immigration to do this? If I do it before December 26th, will I still have to go to the border to get a 3 month stamp or do they stamp 30 days in when I turn in the application?

I plan to travel around Christmas within Thailand. Is there a chance I'd be called to the immigration office or do I just report back a month later?

Anyone done this recently at Chiang Mai Immigration? Anything special I should know?

Basicly your list is OK. Don't forget the misses has to accompany you for an interview and you will have to provide an extra copy of everything.

Have the marriage registered at the amphur and take a copy of the marriage register with you. Immigration is now asking for the marriage to be registerd if married abroad.

You can apply during the final 30 days of your permission to stay. Don't wait till the vary last day, incase you forgot some documents. Do it this week if you can, but Thursday they will be closed (holiday).

Another option is to go to the border and get stamped out and in again and recieve a new 90 days to stay. Than you can do your extension of stay in the last 30 days of that permission to stay.

You should apply during the last 30 days of your permission to stay, bringing with you the wife for interview. You will also need completed application form TM7, copies of passport/TM6 departure card and current passport sized photos. Some offices are now asking also for Kor Sor 2 (copy of marriage register) so best to check as you may need to have your marriage details registered at the amphur, if not already done.

You will get a 30 day under consideration stamp and date to go back to immigration to collect the remainder of your extension. If you plan to travel during the period of the extension you will need to obtain a re-entry permit from immigration to keep your permission to stay alive. Fee 1000 baht single entry; 3800 baht multi entry. .

So I could get a 3 month entry stamp now and not need to apply for the extension until end of February even though my visa expires on January 12?

Corrrect. The visa allows you to travel to Thailand for an unlimited times during its validity. Each time you enter Thailand you get permission to stay for 90 days maximum. The visa and the permission to stay are wto seperate things. So while the visa would expire, your permission to stay remains valid.

In fact, if you leave and re-enter Thailand again on the 11th of january you would get a new 90 day permission to stay.

Have the marriage registered at the amphur and take a copy of the marriage register with you. Immigration is now asking for the marriage to be registerd if married abroad.

I thought our document from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was this. My wife wanted to change her name to mine and the Amphur made us go to Bangkok to the MFA. After we got this document, my wife went to the Amphur and changed her last name and got a new ID card, name changed on household registration, and soon to get passport. Through that whole process she was never technically "registered" at the Amphur?

Just when you think you have all the documents one could ever need... :)

If there is a reason, immigration might extend early.

Toy cannot get a mutiple entry visa, what you get is a one year extension of stay. if you have to travel, you can get a re-entry permit. In your case a mutiple re-entry permit as you want to travel several times.

The multiple re-entry permit cost 3,800 baht and allows you to leave and re-enter Thailand an unlimited number of times. What it does is keep your permission to stay alive when you leave the country. So always be sure to re-enter Thailand before your permission to stay ends. if you don't, you will have to get a new visa from abroad again.

What is the document called in Thai script needed to prove marriage? Is it the ทะเบียนฐานะแห่งครอบครัว คร22?

Form Kor Sor 2, obtained from amphur. It is a copy of the ledger entry that shows your marriage details. The amphur will know the document - see here.

My wife is convinced that the คร22 serves the same purpose as Kor Sor 2, but that the คร22 from the Amphur is for those who were married outside of Thailand. The documents look very similar in content. Thanks for the link. I guess we'll see what happens.
