Soldiers seize 40,000 speed pills in drug bust

CHIANG MAI, Dec 10 (TNA) – Thai soldiers seized 40,000 methamphetamine pills Thursday and arrested a transnational drug syndicate member in the northern province of Chiang Mai, according to Maj-Gen Prakarn Chonlayuth, commander of the Phamuang Force here.

A Chinese Wa origin identified as Lang Chang, 28, was apprehended in Mae Ai district of Chiang Mai after being ambushed by army rangers Wednesday night near the Myanmar border.

Due to the influx of 1.4 million methamphetamines and about 100 traffickers being nabbed during the past two months in the region, the authorities have intensified anti-drug trafficking measures.

An operation centre against drug trafficking was set up in December to stem drug trafficking in 14 districts of the northern border provinces of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Mae Hong Son as well as to eliminate about 10 drug syndicates in the country. (TNA)
