Its new years tomorrow and what better way to celebrate than blowing things up ... snip ...

Sawasdee Khrup, Khun JBob,

Well, how about :

1. walking an hour or two out in nature, then an hour of quiet prayer or contemplation with an intent in your heart for peace in the world first, and yourself(ves) second.

2. buy 10 take-out orders of some tasty Thai soup, or dish, and give them away to the Akka ladies in the Night Bazaar.

3. exercise, and settle in with a good book, safe and secure at home, knowing you're (and possibly your family, friends, etc.) are starting the year off in a healthy way out of danger from drunken drivers.

4. make happy (farang) new year's cards to give to the Thai people in your neighborhood who've been kind to you in the last year.

5. okay, what the hel_l : dance the night away in an altered state via alcohol, or whatever, but give your car or motorcycle keys to a sober friend to hold for you with instructions not to give them to you unless you are sober :)

Be careful now ...

best, ~o:37;

On my way home I noticed that the shop across the street from the Holiday Inn, which sells items to donate at buddhist temples, was setting up their tables to sell fireworks. I usually buy mine there during Loy Krathong, etc, and the prices seem pretty good.

re ... good place to buy fireworks and lanterns from.

fireworks ..... green arrow .... go past the front of mea ping rimping .... turn left at the secondhand clothes market and about 200 yards on your left you will see this small fireworks shop ... if you get to the fire station on your right youve missed it and gone too far '

lanterns .... red arrow ... go down chiang moi road to just before warrarat market turn left and there are two or three lantern shops within 100 yards

Please don't add to the insanity of it all. So many children lost fingers, hands, feet, etc. this last Loy Krathong from Chinese made firecrackers and fireworks. Last year the back of my shirt caught fire and burned a good size hole (and my skin) when flaming Sterno fuel from a khom loy dripped on me from above.

And fireworks are illegal to use in Chiang Mai; not that they enforce it. :)

During the recent Loy Krathong period our village was like a war zone with fireworks landing on our roof ,soi ,terrified pets and deafening noise. What fireworks have to do with this particular festival I am not sure.I thought it originally was purely related to making wishes while floating incense and flowers on water.Maybe someone can enlighten me .Granted fireworks have alway been associated with New Years Eve but of late its almost a nightly occurence. The manufacturers must be a laughing all the way to the bank

From what I was told, the noise of fireworks is thought to drive away evil spirits and hence the louder the better.

They also have the additional side benefit of driving away crotchety old farangs... :)

The three or four stalls together in Worarot Market are the best I've seen. They have everything in there including homemade rockets (20mm tube) at 10 for 150 baht. They go really well. They also have some huge mortars. You'll find them near the northeast corner of the main building.

/that should be northwest//
