Wholesalers In Bangkok

I'm interested in researching large warehouse outlets in Bangkok that supply the shops and businesses in Thailand. The places that the smaller shops buy their goods from whole sale for cheaper prices. I'm particularly interested in ornamental and hand crafted Thai items. Any information would be appreciated. Even names would be a start. My Thai wife has told me the name of one wholesaler she remembered called (phonetical translation) "bow bay" but we can't find it.

Which are the largest ones and what are their names?

The smaller shops and market stalls buy from the larger markets (often manned by the manufacturers themselves), not from any large warehouse. Bobae is the cheap cheap one selling mainly clothes and is near Khao San Road. Chatujak is still your best bet for handicrafts with the makers often bringing them down to sell on buses from the North every weekend. You may think you'll get a much better deal buying from the source location in the North or wherever, but you won't.

At the Bobae tower or prince hotel

This is what I was thinking. I'm under the impression that a lot of the crafted items come from the North where the culture is more authentic and vibrant. Maybe I should start researching the North more than I am Bangkok. I was only thinking Bangkok because the logistics would be a lot easier than the North. However, you're telling me that I wouldn't get better deals in the North? What makes you say that? Have you had any experience of this?

I was aware of the Chatuchak market but not the others so I'm going to check them out. Thanks for the reply.

A friends sells "ornamental and hand crafted Thai items"

She buys at either Sampeng or Chatuchak, mostly the latter.

Although Chatuchak is a "weekend" market, Friday afternoons are, IMO, the best time to shop there.

Haven't spent any real time at Bobae, but it really doesn't seem too strong on the handicrafts. Our friend never bothers with the place.

If you are really serious, you might invest in this.

The handicraft areas are very scattered in the North and North East so it will be hard to find a variety unless you go to specific commercial areas such as in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. The advantage of going to the source towns is that you'll see all they have to offer, but (and I import/export Thai products) I have found very few items there that I couldn't find in Bangkok, and in Bangkok they're all in one place. If you're looking at very specialised things such as wooden furniture and art ok you might find some artisans in the north who don't sell their products through relatives in Chatujak. And yes...pricewise there was no difference between the source and the outlet shop in Chatujak/Pratunam.

Thanon Mangkon in Yaowarat has alot of wholesale toy shops.
