January 14, 201016 yr Lots of amazingly beautiful scenery Sounds like someone has never been to America: Highway One on the California Coast, The Blue Ridge Mountains, Hawaii, the mountains of New England, upstate New York, The Grand Canyon, Yosemite Park... I could go on forever. ummm no...I have been many places. I just never heard someone say I like americans because of the scenery. Perhaps you meant the lawns some maintain? Because that would be some scenery they could take credit for ....I guess Hoover Dam Chrysler Building Falling Water Mt Rushmore Golden Gate Bridge Empire State Building USS Constitution Gateway Arch John Hancock Center Just the beginning of a very long list
January 14, 201016 yr I like Americans because... I am smart enough to realize there are good and bad people in the US just like everywhere and I don't take my personal prejudices and apply them to an entire nation based on my own limited experiences.

I have first hand experience that SBK is fun.. had a great laugh, and good company... doesn't matter where anyone is from, if they are a good laugh, then they are a good laugh. I don't buy into the thought that some nationalities are more fun than others, because that certainly isn't my experience. Totster
January 15, 201016 yr Author I like America because.... It seems it never rains in Southern California. It don't rain in Indianapolis in the summertime Almost heaven, West Virginia, Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River. Old Man River, he just keeps rolling along. New York, if I can make it there, I can make it anywhere Georgia is forever on my mind. And oh, to live on Sugar Mountain....
January 15, 201016 yr Been to Sugar Mountain, serious hillbilly country but lovely scenery. And hillbillies can be lovely people so long as you don't trespass

January 15, 201016 yr Author I have a vague recollection of reading something about Neil Young having some roots in bluegrass.
January 15, 201016 yr I have a vague recollection of reading something about Neil Young having some roots in bluegrass. Same with The Beatles. When Paul joined The Quarrymen, they were playing skiffle, which was a bastard love child of jazz and bluegrass.
January 15, 201016 yr Must say, the Brits do tend to take American music and make it so much more. Maybe they did, maybe they didn't. One thing for sure, if they did, then they forgot how starting in the 1980's when they went all pop-techno music and then later to all boy bands.
January 15, 201016 yr Must say, the Brits do tend to take American music and make it so much more. I agree that there are some great British bands - the Beatles are my all time favorites - but there are plenty of American musicians that are fantastic as well. Have you ever heard of Bob Dylan, Jimmy Hendrix, Emmy Lou Harris, The Eagles, Janis Joplin and so on? There are plenty more.

Whilst I agree that much of the stuff out of Britain wasn't up to much after the 70's. The 'Britpop' era of the 90's was fantastic: Blur, Oasis, the Verve and Pulp etc. are all outstanding groups. But yeah, the 80's is a decade to forget.

But they are little compared to what came out in the 60's and 70's, IMO.

January 15, 201016 yr But yeah, the 80's is a decade to forget. What? Never heard of the Smiths, the Cure, Sisters of Mercy, Elvis Costello, Joy Division, New Order, Roxie Music, the Buzzcocks, the Psychedelic Furs, U2 and many more from Britain. The 80's were right up there with the 60's to anyone who was paying attention!

January 16, 201016 yr Author I must say UG....we have ALOT of musical likes in common. It's a long time since I met someone who liked....knows... The Smiths You have not mentioned one band or artist that I don't like.

The 80's were right up there with the 60's to anyone who was paying attention! The only super group on that list is from Ireland. The others don't come close to matching The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Elton John, Queen, Eric Clapton, Fleetwood Mac, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, and the list goes on. The '80s was a letdown for British music. IMO, so where the '90s and '00s despite a 2-3 bands and some one-hot wonders. Wait, isn't this the "I like Americans Because..." thread? Whoops.
January 16, 201016 yr A lot of those on UG's list kicked off in the 70s as well. I will admit I missed the 80s though. Drugs? Booze? No! ... bloody work.... No time for new bands. Edit: I'll make a note of some of them for my next foray into Youtube though.

I did say if you were paying attention. They were not super groups, but the music was still great and as good as most of the bands that you mentioned.
January 16, 201016 yr Say skiffle, say Lonnie Donegan. Link This link let me listen to "Does your chewing gum lose its flavor on the bedpost overnight" In 8th grade and thirteen this was popular. Gum chewing wasn't allowed in the classroom, so between classes I'd pop a piece in my mouth and chew away, but my girl would pass me between two of my classes during the day and suck it outta my mouth and away she go chewing away on my chewed gum. The first time kinda freaked me a bit, but as we had our mouths merged together for many hours at that age so really wasn't strange after I thought about it. I think about her sometimes and hope she's well and happy and has had a good life.

January 16, 201016 yr He was American and there were plenty of great American bands in the 80s too, but I was into alternative music, which was supposed to not be so mainstream or commercial - much of it was though.
January 16, 201016 yr The 80's had many great bands. But I'm tired of the US vs Britain music thing. btw Ulysses, of course I know those groups, I was just pulling your leg.
January 16, 201016 yr Of course you do. You are one of Thai Visas most intelligent, sensible posters and I agree with almost everything that you say. I just felt that the Brits were so close to us in the good band department, that I needed to speak out. My opinion is pretty much the same on the English lit vs American lit subject. By the way, the Canadians have some wonderful alt. country bands right now which is my favorite music genre for the moment.
January 16, 201016 yr By the way, the Canadians have some wonderful alt. country bands right now which is my favorite music genre for the moment. Well, if Canada is entering the discussion, then you have to mention Leonard Cohen!
January 16, 201016 yr I lump him in with Dylan, Hendrix, and a few others's, great songs, but I wish that they could sing!
