A Story Ready Made For Bedlam

Love rat John Terry under political pressure

THE Football Association came under pressure from the Government to strip John Terry of the England soccer captaincy.

It comes after more details emerged of his affair with the partner of one of his former team-mates.

So what's the verdict? Should the captain of England have a moral responsibility to the country as well as being able to kick that funny round ball into the net thingy?

It's a hard call. On the one hand, what someone does off the field (and supposedly behind closed doors) should have no bearing on his position on the field.

On the other hand.....

As a national representative, there is an obligation, moral and contractual, to the nation, to not bring the nation into disrepute.

As a player of a sport, there is an obligation, moral and contractual, to the sport, to not bring the sport into disrepute.

As a public figure, any celebrity should be aware that youngsters admire and aspire to emulate them....it is in the general public's interest to expect a code of conduct that we would want our own children to follow.

It seems to me that the value of enforcing a code of conduct outweighs the right of a celebrated sportsman to "freedom of expression".

Hmmm.... it is a game that's supposed to be played by gentlemen even if it is watched by thugs.

I recall that the cricketer Shane Warne was denied the captaincy of Australia for his penchant to wander from the marital bed. But then the failed drug test wouldn't have helped either.

I suspect that Warne's publicly outcried infidelity was sufficient to guarantee his non-appointment.

It all comes down to whether or not the indiscretions become public knowledge, because it is all about reputation...of the game, of the club, and of the nation. If Warne or Terry had been caught out ONLY by their respective controlling boards, and there was no chance of a leak to the public, then I am sure the boards would feel no obligation to do anything.

Back in the day the press protected the famous; a scandal usually had to reach the courts to be reported in the press.

I can remember a number of incidents where adultery was common knowledge in media circles but never reached print until it made the divorce court.

Or getting caught match fixing. :)

at least he didn't pay for it with his life like Hanse Cronje. :D

Did Warney throw a match? Can't say I recall that one.

In Australia doing the bad thing with the missus of a team mate is about the worst thing you can do apart from becoming a politician or moving to New Zealand. Remember the furore over Wayne Carey doing that?

However if it had been the wife/girlfriend of a rival club he would have been a local legend. What Terry should have done was find the wife of his counterpart in the French national squad and done her, he would have been knighted for services to the Crown and become the hero of millions of brits around the world.

:)

Did Warney throw a match? Can't say I recall that one.

S. Warne and M. Waugh got themselves in a little hot water on the sub-continent for talking with bookies.

In 2000 the Delhi police intercepted a conversation between a blacklisted

bookie and the South African cricket captain Hansie Cronje in which they learnt

that Cronje accepted money to throw matches. The South African government

refused to allow any of its players to face the Indian investigation unit, which

opened up a can of worms. A court of inquiry was set up and Cronje admitted to

throwing matches. He was immediately banned from all cricket. He also named

Saleem Malik (Pakistan), Mohammed Azharuddin and Ajay Jadeja (India). Jadeja was

banned for 4 years. They too were banned from all cricket. As a kingpin, Cronje

exposed the dark side of betting, however with his untimely death in 2002 most

of his sources also have escaped law enforcement agencies. Two South African

cricketers, Herschelle Gibbs and Nicky Boje, are also wanted by the Delhi police

for their role in the match fixing saga. A few years before in 1998, Australian

players Mark Waugh and Shane Warne were fined for revealing information about

the 'weather' to a bookmaker.

That's right.

To be honest I didn't think there was much in it. Would be dynamite these days though.

Of course Terry's got to go.

Perhaps he could take up golf...

He's lost the respect of the team. It was a team members girlfriend he was shagging. So as captain he has to step down. He'll still play on though.

You just don't play patty-fingers with a friends partner, it is just not acceptable.

Discussed this with some friends over a coffee in Chiang Rai yesterday, one of then a former professional footballer.

The consensus was, there are enough women making themselves available in that life without stealing team mates partners. Sack him.

But what if they were in love? I had my life disrupted over an affair once, I'll avoid the sordid details so as not to offend the more sensitive, but I could have no more avoided it than I could have held back the tide.

Believe me, I paid for my sins though.

Ahhhh, adding love into the equation does change it a bit in my view. I agree with you that the feeling of love can not be fought. However, depending on the circumstances, it may be appropriate to fight the impulse to act on the feeling.

I think it has been assumed that in this case it was just lust, though.

So, if the two had been caught in flagrante delicto, but then proffessed their love, divorced their partners and married each other.....would that put a different spin on what outcome should occur?

I sort of think it does.....I mean....who could blame them?

She's French, isn't she?

Anything goes.

(Probably a Froggie plot to disturb the English team from the outset)

(And she's talking to Max Clifford about publishing her memoires - so it's all about the money again - in't it?)

She's French, isn't she?/quote]

Italian - underwear model. I also found out today that she is his EX girlfriend not current when Terry was showing her a good time

CB

but but but, it must be her fault. Not his, never mind that he IS married and still with his wife, never mind that she is not with her ex and is single. She is French and she is a woman et voila! guilty as charged.

That's definitely not the consensus of opinion if you read the thread SBK, it was even suggested they were in love by someone showing his sensitive new age side.

Typical example of stereotyping Western middle aged men living in Thailand.

Wow, you're sensitive lately scead. Was being facetious, Pardon me for falling so flat.

edit: ooh look HB said pretty much the same thing but I don't see you jumping all over his post, do I ? You need to, as they say these days "take a chill pill"

Apology accepted sbk.

Yes, I have been a little out of sorts lately, been getting bullied in Outside the Box. :)

Hey, watch it you... if you think there's no serious discussion in OTB get there and read the topic about the psychic cat!

Buddha give me strength. :)

Is that the one about the cat in the Old Folks Home - if it jumps on your bed, you're dead?

They're all German spin bowlers (Jerry Hat-trick), so if the moggie jumps on the bed, they just say "Lord I'm coming" and hop on the Starlight Express.

Don't see anything remarkable there.

SBK - Scea knows I'm always stirring the pot, so he ignores me.

You, on the other hand, are this sober-sided 'Admin' person who is somewhere up in the higher realms of Fora World and thus to be bowed-down-to and worshipped as a minor deity (only one joss-stick). Therefore it is understandable that one is sensitive to the possibility of lightning and thunderbolts being hurled from Olympus (or Nikon, for that matter).

I'd prefer a chilli pilli.

I did run a jaundiced eye over HBs post but decided that seeing he's old and simple minded to let it slide. :)

You want to show us which post someone said it was her fault?

And she is Italian not French

In summation I think Terry is an idiot for cheating on his wife. In my moral code - cheat on a partner, relationship ends. People who do it and say it was a spur of the moment thing and it will never happen again are either deluding themself or trying to fool their partner.

CB

Only one joss stick HB? That's bad. One is for dead people :)

You just don't play patty-fingers with a friends partner, it is just not acceptable.

A typical response when not knowing all the facts before hand
