just had my affirmation (freedom to marry) form signed at my local consulate, sent it off for translation. they tell me this form still has to have the official bangkok stamp on it for the amphur office to accept it if i want to register my marriage there. Is this true? they can perform this service for 2,400 baht. has anyone been through this? any advice?

That's correct. Once you have the Affirmation to Marry certificate from your consulate, that has to be translated into Thai, and the original and translation sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in BKK. Cost for this can vary, but 2400 baht would be the going rate I guess. This can take between (from Phuket) 7 to 10 days to be returned from the MFA in BKK. I believe that you can fast track this yourself, if you want to travel to BKK and pay an appropriate fee.

Once you have both the original and translation returned, you can go to the Amphur at virtually any time and register your marriage. Cost in the Amphur is 100 baht, plus some small change for any photocopies (and there are always photocopies) that need to be taken. Apart from the Affirmation documents, only your passport is required (and the good lady's ID card of course).

If you want to go to Bangkok yourself to get the papers authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, you can get it translated there as well. If you choose the speed delivery service at MFA you have the papers back in max 4 hours for just a few hundred bath extra. When I did it in 2005 it was cheaper to fly both ways and do it myself than hire a Phuket-based translation office to do the service. At that time they asked for 4200 bath and papers back in 14 days...

I got my papers authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in BKK at Xmas, I can't find the receipt, but I sure it was only 1,000 bht, I was in no hurry, so I returned 2 days later to pick them up

Bangkok translation services in Phuket town are 2600 baht to do it all.. Plus of course your consuls fee to provide the affirmation in the first place.
