Restaurant Review - Ton Kao On Surawong

Featured Replies

I used to go to a great seafood place that opened only at night on a soi off Silom. I went on a recent trip and it is basically not worth going to anymore. I usually stay at The Plaza on Surawong which puts me in the heart of the action and central to almost everything in Bangkok. The Plaza, while a little dated, is actually a great deal. We had two rooms at 1100 baht with breakfast. We stayed on the 7th floor and the room was decent for the money.

Anyway back to the restaurant. The Plaza has Somboon Seafood right across the street but while the food is good I have never been a fan on the atmosphere or the prices. It seems popular with Japanese tour groups.

This time we got a recommendation from a door man at The Plaza. He was from Isaan and was talking to my wife who's from Mukdahan and said we should go to Ton Kao which is just down the street from the hotel. ILooking at google maps I think it would be on the south side of Surawong just east of The Plaza Hotel heading toward Patpong. Here is a google map link. Ton Kao

The food here was excellent. The staff were super with service. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good airconditioned restaurant in the area. Most dished are fairly priced from about 90 to 300 baht. My favourite was Kung Pow at 260 baht. The Guy Ped Met was also excellent and I believe under 100 baht. We had a feast for three with drinks, appetizers and five main course dishes for about 1200 baht. Not the cheapest food in the area but I get sick of eating street meat while sweating like a pig.

Here are the photos I took with my cellphone.

Hope someone finds this helpful. Check it out. You will not be dissapointed.
