Hello,

I am a teacher in Bangkok, I resigned a job in December and am now making a good amount of money from photography and part time teaching. My visa runs out on the 6th of July 2010 so I have been using that. I found out my old school canceled my work permit in December. I realise i may be on overstay now because you have to leave the country after cancellation. I tried to do a visa run but couldn't get into Cambodia on a day run. I was wondering if anyone knew if it would be ok for me to fly to England with me being British. Or perhaps fly to Penang to get a Thai visa. The reason i couldn't get into Cambodia by land is because i don't have a stamp saying my work permit was canceled. Does this apply with flying to another country or entering a country other than a day trip, say straight into Laos? I bought a re-entry visa in Bangkok immigration by mistake thinking it was the correct stamp.

Also how much will i get fined if i get the cancellation stamp for the work permit, the maximum 20 thousand or more. Not sure what to do at present if anyones got any advice it would be great to hear.

Kind Regards

If you are on an extension of stay for employment and your WP was cancelled in Dec....you are on an overstay.

Stand to be corrected, but dont beleive you get a stamp in your PP once your WP is cancelled.

Upside is they can only fine you a max of THB 20,000, but wouldnt get caught by the BiB in the interim, as you could end up as a guest of Thailand's finest....

Cant see any reason you cant fly out, pay your fine at the airport and go and get another visa

If on an extension of stay he should have visited immigration on day employment ended and a stamp ending his extension of stay would have been put into his passport.

It is not clear where/why/who said he could not enter Cambodia from post. I do not believe it is because of a work permit (which immigration normally has no data on). And if he had a re-entry permit there would not have been any reason to question the exit unless the traveler said he was leaving to obtain a 15 day entry stamp on return (which would have sent up multi red flags).

As for air exit if you were stopped by immigration there may be a note in your file now.

At any rate - the max fine would be 20k and you should not have any problem getting a new visa with normal qualifications. But be aware work without a work permit is an offense and the looking the other way that many teachers get does not always spill over into other endeavors.
