Hi All,

I am due to commence work in Bkk shortly. I have all the appropriate visas, permits, etc. for myself and daughter. My wife is Thai.

My parents will be coming out to visit quite frequenty, and will be staying for as long as possible each time (2-3 months preferred). They are both retired (Father over 60) and have pensions etc. so are "financially secure" and can demonstrate same. They have both been to Thailand a few times on tourist visas. They will be staying with me, at my house (which I will be renting).

They would like to be able to come in and out of the country and would probably like to be able to spend most of their time in Thailand. Would they be able to apply for some sort of "retirement" visa and if so is there any fanfair associated with that, like the need for visa runs and so on. For example, if they come out for a month and half way through decide they'd like to stay on for another month or two, they would like to have that flexability - rather than having to conitnuously apply for 60 day tourist visas and all the limitations that come with that.

I have tried to find this out by doing searhces etc. but the goal posts are moved so frequently, and one can never tell if they are reading current information or outdated stuff.

Many thanks in advance.

A multiple-entry non-immigrant visa category "O" (non-O visa) to visit family, ie their son, is one option, as intimated by Bizz

Another option would be to start with a single-entry non-O visa, then apply for one-year extensions of stay under paragraph 2.20 of Police Order No. 777/2551. For this type of extension your parents do not have to show evidence of a certain income or a certain amount of money in a Thai bank. Required documents, see paragraph 2.20. However, they will need a multiple-entry re-entry permit for 3,800 Baht or, if they make no more than three trips to Thailand per year, single-entry re-entry permits at 1,000 Baht each.

All things considered, the multiple-entry non-O visa will be probably be more convenient for them. No annual visits to the local immigration office. No paperwork for you. Perhaps even lower cost per year, or only minimally higher cost.
