according to a local travel agency owner, just returned from a conference in kunming,

AirChina will be starting direct flights from chiang mai to kunming next month.

no further details.......

That would be great. Thai used to fly that route and canceled it over a year ago.

A great way to get in to China and close to Tibet & Shangri-la and many great places in Yunnan. Flight time is only 1 hour and 20 minutes if I remember.

I wonder if it will be cheap? what sort of price range do you think they might go for?

Brilliant! Can't wait. Have heard there are ski slopes in that part of the world...anyone knows about that? Wouldn't it be fantastic if we could all be on a ski slope in winter within a fwe hours of here?

Stood at the top station there in April of 2008, no jacket required and quite spectacular. Many touts at the bottom selling mini oxygen cylinders and renting heavy jackets.

Lijiang old town and the surrounding area is fantastic.

As much as I'd like to see that flight happen, I doubt it will happen soon. Several new flights are listed on the Air China homepage -- http://www.airchina.co.th/en/index.html. Don't you think they would mention it and start taking reservations if they're really going to start flying this route "next month"?
