Derived from Petroleum.
The term Petroleum has been derived from two Latin words 'petra' and oleum'. The Latin word petra means 'rock' and the Latin word oleum means 'oil'.
Probably came into use to distinguish it from other oils in use at the time such as whale oil.
Please feel free to enquire of any other proper English useage/spelling.
