When i lived on Samui there used to be organised mini buses down to the border for the visa run.Very cramped but cheap.I used to go on to Penang for a bit of a break.

There is a "Penang made easy" visa run thread you may want to look at. :o

You probably want to go to the immigration office on Samui prior to the 20th and apply for a 30 day extension of stay. Will cost 1,900 baht. Then after that ends you need to make visa runs but you only have to cross border and return so there would not be any need to travel to Penang. You can get about 9 months out of your three entry visa this way rather than 6 months if you only stay 60 days on each entry.

Welcome to Thailand :o

OK, this is how it works to maximise your stay:-

You got 60 days stamp on arrival.

* Just before your stay expires trot on down to your local immigration office, you can get another 30 days extension for a fee (1900 Baht I think).

When that extension expires (just before actually) you must leave the country and re-enter to trigger the second entry on your visa. You just have to go out into a second country, you can return immediately (no requirement to stay overnight or anything).

You will receive a second 60 day stamp.

Repeat from * until you use up all your entries.

Penang is a nice place to go for a weekend but you can travel anywhere as long as you are out of the Kingdom.

When you require a replacement visa Penang is currently the recommended location (but things can change).

Piece of cake. :D:D

With the emergence of the budget airlines, when you do have to eventually leave the country, you could probably fly down to Singapore and back direct from Samui for two thousand baht or so.

I flew down once and caught the train back through Malaysia but would not recommend the train as the view is Palm oil plantations for hundreds of kilometers.

Samui is not a budget airline stop AFAIK.
