Home Counties, Public Schools

Featured Replies

Curious.

I always find myself suprised when watching a British this or that when it is suggested that going to a public school is a posh thing, or living in the home counties makes one a higher class.

Where I come from a public school education is not something to be proud of so much, and if you lived in the home counties, the name would inspire state housing type accommodations.

I went to an all boys private school which eventually amalgamated with an all girls school becoming a co-ed institution. Yet if I was in the US, it seems to me that only a girl is called a co-ed if they attend a co-ed school, yet the boys are not. I find that very strange.

I find many of these differences interesting, I mean surely by definition a public school education is pretty standard right? if not then what is a standard school to attend?

Or am I mistaken with all this?

A coed is a girl. A coed intuition is one who has girls and boys. A coed dorm is school housing that has boys and girls. When I was in college dorms were segregated. There was a girls dorm and a boys dorm. Later they merged the dorms and they became coed dorms.

I think recent studies have shown girls perform better when they go to an all girl school. That has always been my experience.

So, can you explain why a coed is a girl? but not a boy? if they are both at a coed school? is a girl still a coed if she is in an all girls school? I am really confused why a girl would be called a coed.

Sorry, I have wanted to ask these question for a long while, I think it helps to understand the meanings of some phrases instead of hearing them and just wondering Why?

The boys were in the school first. When the girls came in it became co educational. So the girls are called coeds.

Random questions thread maybe?

I long ago took note of the US usage of "coed" as pertaining to girls and ascribed it to "Americanism" (ie, the US trait of bastardising the original word, pronunciation, or spelling....which is not a derogatory comment; I accept that the vernacular is constantly evolving in all countries)

As an Aussie/Kiwi, I too am a bit suprised at the Brit "public school" being posh.....and that I put down to me being Aussie; the Antipodean education system is different, therefore they, the Brits, have different terminology.

I suppose a Brit could be perplexed that Aussie boguns go to public schools.....just as we are confused by American coeds. So to be fair, the Antipodean use of "public school" could be classed as a bastardisation or Australianism.....albeit that an Aussie or Kiwi public school is exactly that, public, as opposed to private, and is thus a more logical name.

ok, they bloody ruin everything don't they :)

I know these are stupid things in reality, but we all have strange little things we don't understand.

A British public school is a private fee paying school run independently of the state education system.

In the United States, a public school is a government funded school open to the general public (go figure)

and in the UK attendance at an approved school is not something to highlight on your resume. :)

In the UK what you call a public school we call a state school.

Ok, that is starting to make more sense now.

Funny things these differences.

We, in West. Aust are closer to the US style it seems.

Although I did attend 4 years at Toodyay District High School, it was through the ages of 5 to 9 years old. Go figure that one out :0

In Melbourne I spent 4 years as a scholarship boy at Essendon Grammar School which is a private school in Oz but which would be a public school in the UK.

Many things in England seem very simple to us, but are confsing to other nationalitiies, who think they understand English.

A public school is a private school (limited admission by choice of the school board)

We drive on the left, which is right. We do not drive on the right, because it is wrong.

We have comprehensive schools, for those who cannot comprehend. (Thickie schools where they play soccer, not rugger)(training grounds for hooligans) (Now I've upset half the readership of this board) (Only half???)

Elevators are put in President Sarkozy's shoes (also in President Medvedev's) but we use lifts to rise or descend in buildings, where we go up from the ground floor to the first floor.

Our cars have boots, our elephants have trunks. (Our pubs have customers who are 'elephants' by nine o'clock)

Brahms and Liszt are well known composers in Austria, but more pub customers in England. ('ere, 'e's Brahms and Liszt an' it's not even chuckin' out time for anuvver 'our)

A rabbit is the national dish of Malta, but the wife rabbits too much in my house, so I rabbit every Saturday afternoon.

And so on. I've got to do some work now, got a meeting to attend.

And in Canada we got the terminology correct. We have the public schools for everyone and education standards are quite high, despite some schools having more graduating students than others. Our private schools are just that, private to students whose parents pay a fee for entrance. The private schools vary widely in their educational standards even though they must maintain the standards set by the public school board. The more expensive private schools have fewer students per teacher and the students usually obtain much higher grades on the exams set by the public school board. Beyond the first 12 years of education there are universities and colleges. Canadian universities have very high standards of accademics, and it's difficult to get in. The colleges are mostly for technical training, and with a lesser degree of accademics.

Are the academics for higher degrees then?

Yes, doctors, lawyers, teachers and various science fields. And, in a general "arts" degree which is the starting point of further study. At the higher end those with general degrees go into specialized fields... sort of like a high end technical college to get the specialized training. Various universities specialize for those wanting advanced degrees.
