Rajprasong rally ends

By The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Around 1.15 pm, red-shirt leader Jatuporn Promphan appeared on the rally stage making an passionate plea for the red shirts to end protesting at Rajprasong to avoid further loss of life.

"Please understand and I know you all knew I will never abandon you but it is now time to avoid more lives lost because it's our red shirts who got killed," he said.

Jatuporn vowed never to abandon the red shirts nor their political ideology but argued that he would sacrifice himself in order to save lives of the red shirts.

Red-shirt leader Natthawut Saikua said as their leader, the red shirts must now end their rally.

"I can no longer tolerate the cruelty inflicted on us, the red shirts," he said.

Natthawut said the red shirts should conserve their energy and determination in order to fight another day.

He said the red-shirt leaders would sacrifice their freedom in exchange for the safety of their fellow reds.

"Please heed my call for an end to the rally so that we can continue fighting to advance democracy for the future," he said.

He called for the reds to start dispersing and leaving the rally site via routes leading to the National Stadium, where the government had busses waiting to take them home.

Thousands of red shirts appeared emotional and unwilling to disperse.

I am happy those leaders came to their senses and did the right thing, both for their own followers and the other people of Thailand. I hope they get a fair trial and sentence.

Agree and I hope next time around they advance their case, as they have said on surrender, by democratic means. As per the TV web board:-

HOT: Red-shirt Leaders to Stop Deaths/Injuries to Regroup in Future

The key red-shirt leaders have taken the red-shirt stage and called for an end to the red-shirt rally to put an end to the deaths and injuries.

But reiterated that the 'fight' of the red-shirt movement will not stop, adding that the 'fight' will be carried on via democratic means.

You can somehow compare what the 'yellows' did with what the 'reds' have done so that's interesting in itself. But what is your point about the 'yellow shirt leaders?'

Thai anti-government protest leaders surrender

BANGKOK (AFP) -- Thailand's anti-government "Red Shirts" on Wednesday ended their street protest campaign as leaders surrendered to police after a military offensive against their rally base.

At least four Reds leaders turned themselves in, after an overwhelming operation by troops who punched through the barricades of their camp in Bangkok's shopping district which they have occupied for six weeks.

The leaders asked thousands of supporters in the camp to leave, and to proceed to an area where the government has laid on buses so they can depart the capital.

"I ask everyone to go home," said senior Reds figure Nattawut Saikuar in a television interview from the National Police Office where he was in custody.

"There will be police guarding the road and providing security for you. I hope that you return home safely," he said.

Earlier, Reds leaders had tearfully announced the end of their protest movement in front of a large crowd of emotional supporters, including many women and children.

"I know that you are suffering. Some of us are speechless. But we want to stop any more deaths here," said Jatuporn Prompan.

"I know that if the military comes here many of you will sacrifice your lives and we cannot stand to see that."

"We are ending the protests here," said Nattawut from the main protest stage. "I know this is unacceptable to some of you and some of you do not want to hear but we cannot stand against this cruelty."

"We will exchange our freedom with your safety. We have tried our best."

Does anyone know what happened to the Yellow Shirt leaders, after they closed the airport in Dec 2008? I have not heard of any of them serving jail sentences right now (I could be wrong) if so, seems a bit unfair to me that they can close down the airport and get away scott free. Or could be something to do with the fact that their side came into government afterwards, so they escaped punishment?

It will be interesting to see what happens to the Red Shirt leaders

I don't understand why these people are allowed to make comments as they have the right and second chance for the last word. Allowing them to say we will continue the fight can only mean one thing to the majority of the "protesters". I wonder if the protesters think they were doing the right thing and should continue?

Funnier still, this government boycotted an election, most probably will get caught out for electoral fraud shortly, are responsible for killing dozens of unarmed protesters and unarmed foriegn reporters, muzzle the media, got into power via a parlimentary deal rather then through elections , and only because the opposition was disqualified for a cooking show. And the most ironic thing of all, is that these people call themselves the DEMOCRATS !

At least the foriegn media for the most part knows that this goverment is full of sh## , pity some of the expats are still clueless though.

I'm sure anybody with an inkling of commonsense can conclude on their own that what the yellow shirts did and what these people did are exactly the same. :) I'm not saying that what the yellow shirts did was the right thing to do, or how they did it, but you can't compare this event to taking over an airport. What relevance are you insinuating? :D

The point is that the yellow shirt leaders have been charged but never gone to trial over the airport and government house protest and are now out on bail. It will be interesting to see if the wheels of justice turn as slowly for the Red leaders as it has for the yellow leaders. Interesting days ahead I think

Yup, its pretty obvious to anyone with half a brain cell to see what is really going on, and the real reason why this pathetic government is holding on to power.
