Needless to say, I would welcome a re-elected Democrat-led government just the same, and to be honest that looks a lot more likely! :)

Many of us who were here in 2000 leading up to the Jan 6, 2001 election remember the feeling among many that this new guy from CM ... Thaksin ... was something special. Someone who was reform-minded but who could unite people.

Things seemed to go smoothly for a while after that.

Then ... well, ... ouch.

You got it right.

Who else is good enough to do the job.

Thaksin lined his pockets and still let the poor, get even more poorer.

With all the Reds actions.

Now the whole of Thailand is hurting with all the jobs lost and who will support them, Thanksin, i don't think so.

I have business in Chiang Mai also and have no intention of going anywhere, regardless of who is in charge of government. If foreigners are thrown out of country, obviously I will leave. But otherwise have no plans to go anywhere. When I came here Thaksin was PM and now Abhisit but fact is my life is exactly the same either way. This could change in the future, of course.

I do agree that it is smart idea for farang to keep their opinions about whole political situation to themselves or discuss with other farang. Okay to talk with Thais if family or very close friends maybe, but otherwise it is maybe better to keep quiet about it.

I agree fully and no matter how strong we feel about it or how much it affects us, it really is none of our business.

Though I do enjoy reading/ discussing this and many other subjects on this website. If we had the right to vote then we could get involved, until then stay safe everyone.

Nah of course not. Maybe if the sheep had the courage of their convictions they would be out there doing something rather than being keyboard kooks and nannas in dressing gowns whinging and wining.

what would you suggest? go out and fight them? these guys are hooligans pure and simple.

smashing a sign or burning buildings are cowardly acts of vandalism

Looks like they arrested the farang seen throwing stones in Chiang Mai at the advertisement outside the Provincial Governor's House in the Youtube video. He's a 44 year old Dutch national who was in Thailand working as an English/French teacher, and he's confessed already.

He was turned in by a Polish former policeman married to a Thai who recognised him from the video.

Ok, I'm not sure just what to make of this. Yesterday my wife went to Lamphun with a couple of friends. When she returned to C.M. later in the evening she stopped to visit her favorite cousin, who's husband is a Senior Sergeant with the local BIB. According to her, he told her that 5 people were killed Wednesday night by soldiers, but there are no witnesses, so it will never make the news. Has anyone else heard anything like this that might substantiate it?

P.S. My wife is not one who lies or makes things up, so don't even go there.

There was a report of soldiers killing 4-5 out in Isaan. Apparently they were the ones that burnt down the provincial hall. I only saw one post about it so can't corroborate.

The uselessness of Thai police - in the beginning, I found it amusing. The anything-goes country. But over time, it has taught me that many bad things happen in a country without executive. The police in Thailand is more or less a mafia extorting money wherever they can. About the only thing they do that serves the public is directing traffic.

There is nothing we can do about the situation in Thailand.

I never was a friend of authority growing up, and certainly never a friend of the police in my country. I was a demonstrator facing an anti-riot squad, and it wasn't fun. Things happened. But I have made myself a promise: Next time I go back home, I am going to walk up to a policeman, and shake his hand, and say: "Thank you.". He'll say "Thanks for what"?. "Thank you for doing your job."

We were reading a blog by a Thai guy (presumably updated by Blackberry or something) as things unfolded in ChiangMai yesterday. In one incident he witnessed, the criminals in red blocked a bridge and when the police came in their car the reds shouted at them and threw rocks, and the police ran away like girls leaving their car. I am going to have trouble not laughing when I next encounter a Thai policeman - it may not be red but they sure have shown THEIR true colours right through this debacle.

The criminals in red appear to be following at least some sort of rudimentary plan. I can't help but wonder why the authorities didn't have undercover people at their camp at the hotel - getting intelligence - and readying countermeasures ... ie. adequate numbers of police and army at bridges, BKK bank branches, etc. Couldn't tear themselves away from the TV set for long enough or what?

..CIA or Thai Special Branch have been working every day for past 3 months on this..they also have officers working within..so they are doing quite a lot collecting and collating data etc

Around the 18th second the bald Dutch guy throws a rock at the sign.

I drove past Dukes the day after this and am sure his sign had been hit by something as well.

"The two Dutchmen, aged 44 and 17, who were arrested in Thailand for throwing stones during last week’s riots in the northern city of Chiang Mai, have been released with a warning. Salient detail: they were taking part in a rehabilitation project for people addicted to drugs or other substances. "

apparantly, both were "clients" at the 'Creating Balance Thailand addiction clinic' :)

It is good to see they were not railroaded because they are farangs but I feel they should have received a little more than this.

Such behavior does not help in maintaining good attiudes betwen thai and farang.

In my view drugs are no excuse. I do not condem someone because he or she has a problem but they are still responsible for their actions.

Here's even more good new quoted from the article

He had earned a teaching certificate and was ready to start work next week as a teacher.

He could be teaching your kids next week, unbelivable :D

Dutch drug addicts and they come to Thailand to clean up their act - something is seriously wrong with the Dutch social welfare system if this is true.

Dutch gov't sending addicts for rehabilitation to Thailand?

I really have to question this, as well.

Everyone needs a second chance, and we can all make mistakes in our lives. And I wish the best for these individuals- I hope they find peace in their lives.

But I have to wonder at the cost of this exercise in social engineering.

Get busted for cocaine addiction in LA; I can guarantee the LA District Attorney will not sent you to Cali, Columbia to do a drug rehab program....<deleted>
