I've got a nice ring on my counter top from a plate that sat there for about an hour which had some vinegar on the bottom. The etched ring is about 8 inches in diameter and up to about a half inch wide in places. It is discolored and rough to the feel and I'd like to smooth it out and seal it again. I've looked for some kind of polishing compound at the usual places and all I can find is something to seal the stone with.

I don't know exactly what kind of stone this is but it is definitely not granite or marble even though it has a marbled look. It seems to be made the typical stone that has been used for counter tops in all of the apartments or houses I have rented here in Thailand. For all I know it could be something soft like soapstone.

Does anyone know if

1) any type of polishing compound is available in Thailand for this?

2) wet/dry sandpaper with 1000 or maybe 2000 grit can be used to smooth it out?

3) there is something else I could try?

Thanks - Grin
