I would like to find a Doctor in Chiang Mai that has experience treating HIV. He/she should speak english and be up on current treatment guidelines. Thank you for your recommendations.

While there are non-profit clinics specializing in HIV treatment in Chiang Mai, I am under the impression they are slanted to the impoverished.

Chiang Mai University Hospital HIV Clinic is my best guess. They have professors doing research on the subject and they do sponsor regional and international seminars regularly where the information coming out of them seems cutting edge.

The "type" of your HIV "strain" may be problematic if it is of the type found in western countries. Local experience is exactly that, but the professors are able to tap into the world database on the best treatment regimens for various strains.

There is so much HIV information on the web that you can certainly "monitor" your choice of physician's advice. Most doctors in Thailand learned their medicine in English so are proficient, however, their ability to express themselves and their "clinical" attitude vs. bedside manner are below western standards.

Finding one that "talks" to you and answers your qustions may take time.

Treatment guidlines are available on the web.

Good luck.

If it is a serious situation I for one would be heading to Bangkok, can't recommend the best hospital but Bumingrad is the biggest.

Don't take any chances

Good Luck

Dr. Narong Lao

Chiang Mai Ram 2, and he has his own evening clinic near Pratu Chiang Mai

Phone 053-202-292 (clinic)

Good guy, and very up on Hiv issues and treatments. Speaks English.

Otherwise, Suan Dawk Hospital is your best bet. They are the main research and resource center for HiV in the north, and they are your best resource for info and services, in my opinion. Don't let the fact that they are a government hospital put you off, in this case.

Thank you all for the kind replies.

No, nothing serious. Just monitoring my numbers until it is time to begin the anti-virals.

I have actually been going to Suan Dok for my checkups. I'm sick of the very long waits, and I usually end up seeing an intern rather than a professor. I was hoping to find a competent doctor at a private hospital for the convenience factor.

Maybe I should have a talk with Dr. Narong. :o
