What Kind Of 3g In Thailand

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm about to purchase a nexus one from Ebay but I get two options to which model I want.

There are two different versions running on different 3g network.

Which one is being used in Thailand ?

Here are the two options :

1.Supports three 3G/UMTS bands (850/1900/2100 MHz) and four GSM radio frequencies (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)

2.Supports three 3G/UMTS bands (900/AWS/2100 MHz) and four GSM radio frequencies (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)

Thanks

It depends on which opperator you will use.

from GSM World

Advanced Info Service PLC (AIS GSM) - GSM 900

Digital Phone Co Ltd (GSM 1800) - GSM 1800

TOT PLC (TOT Mobile) - GSM 1900

TOT PLC (TOT Mobile) - 3G 2100 Planned

Total Access Communications Co (DTAC) - GSM 1800

True Move Company Ltd - GSM 1800

(CAT/Hutch use CDMA, won't work)

re-reading the spec of the equipment list you provided.

In Thailand, your only choices are between GMS and CDMA (no UMTS)...

The boxes you specified both do the same GSM freequencies ("four GSM radio frequencies (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)") so either will work equally.

If TOT do roll out their planned 3G (I assume UMTS) network at 2100MHz, either box will work for that as well.

Actually UMTS is used in Thailand!

HSDPA is part of the UMTS standard and is in use in Thailand, albeit under so-called "trial" operations. UMTS (HSDPA) is indeed only available on GSM networks.

For an overview:

True offers 3G (UMTS HSDPA) on 850 mhz in parts of Bangkok.

AIS offers 3G (UMTS HSDPA) on 900 Mhz, their biggest coverage area is in Chiang Mai.

TOT offers 3G in large parts of Bangkok on, according to their website, the 900/2100 Mhz band ( http://www.tot3g.net/en/howto_setting_detail.php?setID=3 )

So your location and the coverage of the current providers in your area will dictate what handset you'll need. If they ever get round to licensing the 2100 Mhz 3G spectrum, both sets will work of course...

Unfortunately, the biggest 3G coverage is by CAT (and hutch) and uses the CDMA 2000 network, on which they have their 3,1 mbps EV-DO service. Not compatible with any HTC handset!

Thanks everybody for your info.

I didnt know they had cdma service in Thailand. I bought a cdma phone (no sim can be inserted) and I was calling around but it seems like no one is offering this service, is that correct ?

I would suggest getting the American (850) version , I got my Nexus one from MBK and can only use TOT 3G due to it being the 900mhz version - it really is super quick in Bkk but the phone signal is just crap as soon as your indoors.

Wicked phone BTW
