June 11, 201015 yr Deer don't like nicely manicured lawns. Neither do squirrels and other small game. But, they do like my back yard. I like wildlife and don't like cutting lawns. Yesterday a nice little buck was sleeping peacefully in my yard and today a doe was in almost exactly the same place. None of my neighbours have dogs and neither do I, so deer like my yard as a sort of sanctuary. They poop on the lawn, trim my tulips and munch on my climbing rose bushes. They only leave if I disturb them with my camera. Judging by the little knobs on the end of the spikes I think he'll be a 2 pointer this year. Today I thought this was the same deer but it turned out to be a doe... She jumped over my 4 ft cement wall to the estate below my home when I disturbed her... Maybe I'll have to take the Gillett razor to my back lawn soon.
June 11, 201015 yr Lovely place you've got Ian. Makes me hungry for BBQ thinking of deer wandering into the back yard,
June 11, 201015 yr Author Lovely place you've got Ian. Makes me hungry for BBQ thinking of deer wandering into the back yard, Yah, this is the deer's view of my place... It's a steep lot that I've terraced with cement walls. My living room is the one at the top with the blinds drawn. The deck is off my kitchen. I've got couple of small ponds with water that circulates from one to the other. It's an attraction for birds and game that come to drink. I prefer more of a natural look, but I still have a lot of work keeping the worst of the weeds at bay. I used to be an ardent hunter, but seldom do it anymore. I don't eat that much meat these days and it's easier to just buy what I need. Besides that, I have a friend who loves to hunt and shoot big game. He keeps me supplied with venison if I need it. I keep reminding the deer that I'm a hunter, but they just ignore me and go on eating my tulips. It's not until I come down with my camera that they run away. Last winter when we had a snow my neighbour told me a young deer climbed right up the stairs onto my porch.

June 12, 201015 yr My parents had a place in the North of Scotland and often had deer wander into the garden. My mother's only complaint was that they ate her geraniums!! But I remember how wonderful it was to sit still as statues in the living room watching them. Of course, no one had a bloody camera at the time!!

Geraniums.......<deleted>.... send the animals around here. Blotty weeds evertwhere. Weeds = geraniums.
June 12, 201015 yr Deer eat everything. I think the colours must attract them. Tulips and geraniums haven't got much of a scent. We did see one doe with her bambi. My nephew, who was three at the time, was mesmerised. As were the adults present. Nothing is as good as seeing wild animals in their natural habitat. I remember my dad getting us all up at some ungodly hour to see them. In the north of Scotland it hardly gets dark at night. Good memories.
June 12, 201015 yr Author Deer and bears are all over the island I live on. I had to pick up this fawn and carry it to the side of the road so following traffic wouldn't run over it. The doe crossed the road right in front of my truck and the following fawn dropped down and played dead right in the middle of the road. Even when I picked it up the fawn lay limp in my arms like it was dead. Only its eyes were watching me. It is odd that being a hunter I have mixed feelings when dealing with game animals.
June 12, 201015 yr Sorry i posted the silly song before i saw your pic of bambi. Must be heartbreaking.
June 12, 201015 yr Author Sorry i posted the silly song before i saw your pic of bambi. Must be heartbreaking. Not heart breaking at all, Patsycat. I just pulled over and directed the following traffic past until the doe came back for her fawn, and then the fawn got up and they left together. Young fawns have a natural instinct to play dead when danger is near. So do other creatures such as opossums. That is where the expression "Playing possum" comes from. Even certain species of snake role over on their back and play dead. The only funny thing about them is if you turn the snake back right side up, it immediately flips over on its back again. Oh, and I've gone through all those stages of the dancers in the Josh song. Kind of funny seeing those days of the big hair, or the hippie era.
June 13, 201015 yr There's A Place For All God's Creatures, Right Next to the Mashed Potatoes. Nice remember ? You're supposed to be playing nice...........

June 13, 201015 yr My first thought was "surf and turf", a pub meal I first saw in Tasmania consisting of a massive piece of grilled red meat surrounded by deep fried prawns.
