I know about the likes of budget, but their prices will be beyond my budget!

be careful. i almost hired a car through a chap known to ubon international hotel. was just about to sign on the dotted line when he announced that i would have to part with a 5000 baht deposit "in case of damage" to the car, no doubt he would find a nick on the car after id used it so i bauled at the idea and instead paid a chap to drive me around looking at the moobahns for the day

If you have a specific day trip in mind, then getting both the car and the driver frees you from a lot of risks like damage, driving infractions, equipment infractions, etc.

I am looking to rent for myself to drive, I just don't really like being at the mercy of public transport.
