Hello kind folks. I need to renew my Thai drivers license (I'm farang) and I'm living in Sakon. Just wondering if anyone knows where the office is or can give some decent directions if you do know? I stay close to the MJ Hotel. Thnx

Across the street from Phuphan Place Hotel on Hwy 22.

Take hwy 22 out of town, stay in the far right lane.

It's at the intersection where the Udon Hwy and Nakhon Phanom Hwy meet

look for the square on the map at

Does every foreigner need to have a Thai driving license to drive in Thailand or is this applicable only to nationals of certain countries / Thank you

Luanghans;

Thank you for that very descriptive reply and the link also. I appreciate that.

I believe you can get away with using your drivers licence from your country for 3 months then legally you should have a Thai drivers license unless you want to pay 400 bah every time they stop you for something. I know that you can buy these in Bangkok and other places but if your gonna be here for a long term I would reccomend getting a real one like I did.

I got mine in Bkk 10 years ago and I just had to show them my Car drivers license from Canada to get my Thai Car license and my Motorbike license from Canada to get my Thai motorcycle license. I did however have to go into the room and do the test where you sit in the machine care and play the on-screen video test. It was actually quite fun and I had my license the same day.

Hey Luanghans,

Maybe you can answer this too if you don't mind? I know I will need to bring my passport and my old license to renew but what other documents will I need?;

  • Residency letter? If so where do you get those here in Sakon?
  • Rental contract? Mail or documents with my name on it etc?

Its been 5 years since I needed to do this and last time was in Bkk so that was easy but I'm new to Sakon and my birthday was just on June 28th so I'm pretty sure I should have renewed it then,.

Again Thanx mate for the info;

It turns out that you do need all the regular paper trail even just to renew;

  • Copy of every page in your passport
  • Rental agreement
  • Residents Document from the Immigration office
  • Your old licence

Not sure what the fee is for the new hard license due to I still have 1 year left on my license hahahaha.

They speak ONLY Isaan and when I suggested that legally I am supposed to give a change oif adress and since my license was issued in Chonburi should I not notify them? They looked at each other like <deleted> and just said "boh boh" hahaha but were decent folk.
