Has anyone faced issues with visa agents—what should I watch out for?
I live in Bangkok, in the low Sukhumvit area, and I don't use an agency for the retirement VISA and for the 90 days reporting. I make an appointment with the Immigration Division 1 online (previous registration). This is the link to the Thai Immigration Division 1: Immigration Division1 | กองบังคับการตรวจคนเข้าเมือง 1 – กองบังคับการตรวจคนเข้าเมือง 1, Immigration Division1, บก.ตม.1, ตม1. I show up at the due time with the documents required, and everything is done in few minutes (a couple of hours for the multiple-entry retirement VISA). Using the link above it is also possible to do the 90 days report online (previous registration) without visiting the immigration office, but only if I have been in Thailand for more than 90 consecutive days. As a rule, the first 90 days report, after re-entering the Kingdom from any trip overseas, can only be done in person. An American friend living in my condo prefers to use the Business Center of the Bumrungrad Hospital which, for a very reasonable price (600 THB), ensures he complies with the 90 days report requirement. For more info on the Bumrungrad Hospital Business Center, this is the link: Business Center | Bumrungrad Hospital Bangkok Thailand. -

Chiang Rai nurses wear black in abusive doctor protest (video)
i am a bit confused. The nurse was already wearing black. So how can this video of suspected abuse be used as a reason to wear a black uniform? Also, I have to agree with another reply, it appears his hand hit the chair and not the woman. -

Several neighbouring countries compete with Thailand for foreign retirees
No land or home ownership. No requirement for 800k bank deposit, no retirement visa but annual work visas (without the need to work) issued by agents for about $600 USD. -

Going short-time only, shallow or succulent?
Who gets to choose what breeds are eaten and others as pets? People make up their own rules and there are followers(sheep) that will follow anyone they like or believe in, just like Buddha. People are people, and are seen to do very strange things, some of which are accepted by other like thinkers. Does this make a wrong behavior right, just because thousands consider it to be? Of course not, as there are behaviors that a human with a conscience won't consider normal, even leaving God out of the picture. What I think about suicide being a cowards way isn't what you might see. I know they are suffering as much, or more, than most anyone, because I have researched it and have personally lost friends to it. They had everything going well in their lives, and left behind others who were devastated because they didn't understand why. These days, there are many things to help a person with depression, if they take the first step. I'm not talking about those with terminal diseases and pain if that's what you're thinking but those who have been around long enough to know there is a better way. -

Has anyone faced issues with visa agents—what should I watch out for?
That is also my experience, with an agent. If your documents are all correct, and you need an agent only to help you to do things faster, then you should be able to easily find such agent, and not expensive. However, some people would normally not be able to get a visa (extension) and they look for agents who make the impossible possible. Or in other words, they do illegal things to help you. They are by definition shady. -

Several neighbouring countries compete with Thailand for foreign retirees
Enforcement of taxing incoming remittance after decades of allowing foreign expats to spend their retirement money without taxing it first, is now a huge disincentive for people thinking of retiring in Thailand. Less bang for your buck. Literally gouging anywhere from roughly 15% upwards of the average pension. Yes, US Social Security citizens, military and certain civil government pensions are exempt from taxes with DTAs between their countries and Thailand. Also certain retirement pensions are pre-taxed in some countries as well. For the rest of us, like in Australia, our private pensions and old age government pensions are tax-exempt in our country, making us a target of full tax in Thailand. We get a concession of the first 150,000 Thai Baht being tax-free. For me eventually I'll be taxed around 20% on my self-funded private pension (funded over the years with taxed dollars). So ⅕ of my retirement funds taken away from me as a 'penalty' to live in Thailand. A bitter pill to swallow, especially considering there has been no benefits offered in return. We still face triple tiered hospital fees, park entry fees for farangs, no rights to independently open a business and work in Thailand for most, no health care benefits. Buying property in Thailand - you'd be a fool to buy anything now considering remitting money to buy a property (unless you can prove it came from pre-taxed sources abroad) you face huge taxes up to 35%. Imagine, a 4 Million Baht property you buy from money remitted into Thailand (usual procedure) to face 35% tax on top! So add 1.4 Million Baht to the cost. You'd have to have rocks in your head. I get Thailand economy is in deficit, but targeting an expat portion of people who have been bringing money in to spend 100% on local people, directly supporting often poor segment of society, this will sadly end for many. Sources of support from partners whose finances will be too stretched with this tax, will possibly stop. Spending time out of Thailand to circumvent tax laws, means spending money out of Thailand as well and not contributing to Thai economy, as well as exodus of expats and new expats looking at alternatives instead. A developing country deciding to enforce taxation like a first world country with zero benefits. A deal breaker. Other tax-friendly South East Asian countries and other areas will soon benefit from this.- 1
