Auckland man faces first sex tour charges

An Auckland man is to face the first charges laid in New Zealand over organising child-sex tours to Asia.

The Police Online Child Exploitation Across New Zealand unit said it arrested a 46-year-old motel and property manager in Auckland, just before he was due to leave for Thailand.

The arrest followed an eight-month investigation into the man's activities by police and Customs, including undercover officers.

Imagine actually running a service that involves the rape of children. What a sick world we live in.

The crime should hold the same penalties and treated the same way as any other form of rape. Mandatory life sentences for those found guilty.

While we understand that feelings run high in these kinds of cases it has always been Thaivisa policy to close them as soon as polite discourse is taken over by the hang em high profanity filled posts.

Bear that in mind when posting.

Don't these guys read the papers, there is a crakdown on child molesters especially if you are headed to or coming from Thailand.

Nice to see that Thai authorities are finally working together with foreign authorities in closing down the scummy practise of child exploitation. Unfortunately, it will take a long time to clear Thailand's reputation as a child sex haven.

It doesn't say anything about Thai authorities doing anything, or that he did anything in Thailand. Probably headed to Cambodia.

Not to be cynical or anything but why don't we hear anything of Thais who sell the children or facilitate this ever being caught. They always seem to parade the foreigner for crimes like this but Thais seem to escape this. Is this a face thing ?

I suspect that the real reason is because there is usually a family member involved.

One girl who works for me found out that her mother was trying to sell her daughter's virginity for 10,000 baht. She ended up removing the daughter from the mother's house and had to put her into a boarding school.

If he's guilty I would have preferred it if the NZ police had allowed him to travel to Thailand, where the Thai police could arrest and charge him. Much stiffer sentencing here for that sort of offense, and, somewhat harsher prison conditions.

It was Thailand. It was confirmed as stated above on TV3 news where they showed movie footage from one would have presumed strongly to be the undercover cop and the broadcaster comfimed it as Thailand.

Agree with the poster above...it's a pity the lot aren't being judged by the Thai courts with the sentence carried out in a Thai jail with no pardons.

Because authorities must be involved in these tours, otherwise they wouldn't be happening.

That was very diplomatically spoken. One wonders about the childhood past experiences of these "hang em high " posters as you

put it. They display automatic violent reciprocations which reveal a troublesome or violent past of their own that they blanketly

assume all other strangers circumstances entail.

Name suppression extended for Auckland man

An Auckland man charged with organising and promoting child sex tours to Southeast Asia and dealing in children for sexual exploitation has had his name suppression extended for another week.

The 46-year-old motel and property manager was granted continued name suppression in the Auckland District Court today and remanded on bail until his next appearance on August 30.

His lawyer Chris Wilkinson-Smith requested name suppression for a further week, because several businesses said releasing the man's name would affect them.

Child sex tour organiser remanded on bail

An Auckland man charged with organising and promoting child sex tours to Southeast Asia and dealing in children for sexual exploitation, has been remanded on bail to reappear in court next month. The 46-year-old motel and property manager, who appeared in Auckland District Court today, had his interim name suppression continued.

The man was arrested last month after police swooped on addresses in Remuera and Mangere following an eight-month uncover investigation. The operation was co-ordinated by the Police Online Child Exploitation Across New Zealand (OCEANZ) unit, a specialist team set up in 2009 as part of a global task force focused on online child sexual exploitation. The man was arrested shortly before he was due to leave the country for Thailand.

The former real estate agent was also found not guilty of promoting the tour through a website. He was sentenced to three years' imprisonment by Justice Edwin Wylie in the High Court at Auckland this morning.

He is the first person in New Zealand to be charged with organising and promoting child sex tours.

That sort of makes me a little sick. I take it is 3 years with good conduct to be taken into consideration? I am not easily offended, but these cases against child related crimes get to me; IMO there are few things worse in this world.

Thai underage sex tour organiser named

The man who organised an underage sex tour to Thailand has also pleaded guilty to 10 charges of possessing objectionable material. David Robin Wales pleaded guilty to the 10 charges at the Manukau District Court last month. APNZ has also confirmed that he lost his interim-name suppression. Wales will be sentenced in June.

The 47-year-old is currently serving a three year sentence after being the subject of an undercover police operation. He was found guilty in November of organising a sex tour to Thailand after setting up a trip for a client, who was actually an undercover police officer.

Wales was sentenced to three years' imprisonment by Justice Edwin Wylie in the High Court at Auckland in February. He is the first person in New Zealand to be charged with organising and promoting child sex tours. The High Court trial heard how Wales told the undercover cop he could help him find Thai "boys'' as young as 13 to have sex with.

I think you are being to lenient on them.
