Cat G.Shdsl - Beware!

Featured Replies

I just got a new CAT internet connection and since we did a lot of uploads and skype calls decided to go for the 2M/2M G.SHDSL package.

Big mistake!

CAT themselves (in Pattaya) don't stock this modem but when I visited they directed me to Wattana in Pattaya Klang or the 3rd floor in Tukcom.

Wattana had never heard of that type of modem.

After asking virtually all the shops in Tukcom and getting a lot of blank responses I eventually found ONE shop which had ONE G.SHDSL router for 7000 Baht.

A bit pricy, but if that was what we needed then would have to get it.

Thankfully just before paying the money the woman in the shop asked if it was for CAT internet and after a quick call confirmed that model wasn't compatible with CAT. (It was planet, CAT need zxyxel)

Not one single compatible modem for sale in Pattaya, yet CAT happily sell a service that requires one.

We have now changed to 3M/1M ADSL.

If you do decide to take CAT's package with higher upload speeds, expect to shell out a lot for the router and make sure you find one before subscribing.

Good warning - it's a minefield out there at the moment, and this is the 21st century.

Thanks

(By the way, the CAT CDMA is still pretty reliable though)

I used CAT SDSL 2M/2M without any real problems for 3 years in Phuket and Chiang Rai town and purchased a ZYXEL Prestige 792H SDSL modem ( 10K baht ) for the job.

Having moved outside Chiang Rai, and no fixed line, I now have CAT-CDMA - no other real choice.

The ZYXEL works well, fully featured and not too difficult to configure.

The Zyxel SDSL router is now sitting back in its original box and is up for grabs. If anyone is interested please PM me.
