Mobile Internet Via Usb Modem

Featured Replies

I am looking for a solution to have mobile internet while I will be in Pattaya in October.

Someone recommended the "New World Roaming MD 950 USB card" to me, but I have no clue about what exists or what works.

Can anyone recommend a good mobile internet USB modem and provider?

I need it for just 16 days in October.

I've been using AIS Edge for two months now while I've been here on holiday. I get unlimited internet for 650 baht a month (cheaper packages for limited monthly access are available) with an average of around 150-200k download and 60k upload speeds, which, while not that fast is OK for standard surfing and skype (with the video turned off). I was originally using a Nokia phone (with Nokia PC Suite) as a modem, which works fine but drains the battery if you're on line for two/three hours at a time. So I bought an AIS USB aircard which finds the network within about 7-10 seconds of switch on and is even quicker to connect to the internet. Although a friend of mine has a Vodafone aircard which can take around 3-4 minutes to find the mobile network and sometimes as long again to connect to the internet so they're not all good. They start at around 900 baht for an edge aircard and 2200 baht for a 3G (+edge compatible) aircard.

Any tukcom and any shopping mall with a half decent home electrical/home electronics department will sell them. It's a USB devise that looks a bit like a memory stick but a bit bigger.

At the moment some shops have a promotion and are selling an AIS 3G aircard with 50 hours worth of edge internet for the first month or 30 hours a month for the first six months for free. That's a 3G aircard plus about 900 baht's worth of internet for around 2200 baht. When you consider a standard edge aircard starts at around 900-1000 baht that seems a good deal to me.

And, unlike the ones in the UK, they're not locked to a network so when you get back you can put any UK sim in and it'll work.

Do you know if there are prepaid offers without the need for a subscription?

I am only staying 16 days.

Both DTAC and AIS 1-2-Call have prepaid packages, search the forum, has been answered a few times. (1678 customer service will set you up for DTAC, can send an SMS for 1-2-Call)

Without doing anything prepaid costs about 2B / min, DTAC has 1-day, 1-week, 1-month unlimited packages, AIS has 5-10-100-300-500 hours or so.

Just walk into any AIS or DTAC shop and they'll tell you the prepaid cost. You can literally pay as you use the internet for 1 baht per minute or prepay for a set amount (in hours) for one month. I paid 650 baht for unlimited access with AIS. I know they also a 50 hour/month package for 150 baht and have other options available as well, all on a one month prepay option. I think the net sim card cost 49 baht. DTAC have similar packages but I think their 'unlimited' one is more expensive.
