This has happened a couple of times recently.

I get low power, Engine warning light comes on, I pull over and the engine dies, starts up again straight away and carries on as though no problem exists.

Its nearly 5 Years old, original everything including battery, 71,000 Kms and fully Toyota serviced from new.

Fuel filter clogged up maybe ? Air filter ? It has been used on my Farm, going over plowed fields in the dry season etc, so very dusty conditions.

Going to Toyota in the next few days, just wonder if anybody has any idea what it could be. smile.gif

I've also had a car with a clogged vent in the fuel cap do the same. Open the fuel cap and see if there's a vacuum in the tank.

I think your own post contains the answer. As unlikely as it seems if I had to guess I would say the battery is knackered.

I had a very similar problem, albeit not on a Toyota. The engine management light would come on, the car (Jeep Grand Cherokee 2.7 CRD) would be as sluggish as hel_l and it wouldn't even change gear (auto box). After pulling over and turning the ignition off for a few minutes, it would start and would be as sweet as a nut.

At the time I dismissed the battery as it was less than a year old. Just in case I had it checked at an autoelectrical place and they confirmed the battery was good. The problem persisted and I just couldn't figure out the problem. I eventually had the battery checked out again at another place. They did a load test on the battery and said it was knackered and replaced it.

That was about 3-years ago and the problem has never raised it's ugly head again since.

Later the same day it wouldn't start at all, then switched off anything that could drain the battery and hey presto, it started fine.

Thats what happens to mine, really sluggish and won't change gear, I keep meaning to have a Battery change, so i'll try that as the first thing. Come to think of it, I disconnect my battery negative terminal when I leave it for a few weeks, I wonder if I have reconnected it badly...blink.gif

Oh well, tomorrow its off to get a new battery !

Why would a knackered battery have this effect, does the car engine management system need a fair amount of power to run efficiently ?

Sounds strange as the alternator supplies the power to run stuff whilst driving and tops up the battery after startup. Think it worth checking the alternator charge rate on idle and up. Volt meter across the terminals should read between 13.5 and 14.5 Volts at idle. Interesting to know if a dead battery cell or two caused the hickup. :)

IF the battery is the problem, it most likely occurs only when engine running/vibrating. Vibrations provide contact problems between cells or on cable.

Yes, this car needs battery power to run engine and auto

Sorry, my brain has been slow, had similar problem picking up my 2006 Vigo from minor paintjob. Engine stopped outside showroom, noticed the clock was not correct, checked battery cable: loose. paintshop had disconnected it, but not tightened it again, and of course not set clock again.

OP I would replace your 5 yo battery with a new Boliden, maintaince free and work very well in Arabic and LOS heat, before bothering seeing Toyota garage. If all warning lights go away and everything works fine, ECU memory can be deleted on your next scheduled Toyota service

Kat, do you have a supplier link for the Boliden dry cell battery ? Been looking for a supplier in Ubon but no luck.

Sorry, no, I just go to my local battey shop:)

Try Google, I noticed ads in Phuket gazette a few years ago

My diesel fortuner has been doing this for 2 years. A guy who has owned Fortuners (diesel) for years says this is due to poor quality fuel and the best place to fill up is Shell. Unfortunately I have an Esso card.

I did think about water in the fuel water trap but then he would have a dash light come on for that, but worth turning the tap just to check theres no water present.

One of the reasons for servicing D4d as often as 10k km/ 6 months in LOS, is drain water/replace fuel filters. In most markets this engine is serviced every 20k km.

My Fortuner has been serviced at Toyota every 10,000km.

I do believe there is another thread on TV on this very subject so this is a common problem and Toyota Thailand are aware of it.

OK guys , went today to get a new battery, upon testing the guy said there is nothing wrong in any place but the battery, when I told him it's nearly 5 years old, he relaxed and told me how lucky I was to have had nearly 5 years out of 1 Battery.

The original Battery in my Fortuner was a GK Battery made in Thailand, I replaced it with another GK Battery, maintenance free, Guaranteed for 1 year battery, 3800 Baht.

New battery fitted the car seems to start so much easier than before, no delay at all, almost instant.

Hopefully, I and you guys ( Thanks guys ), have cured the problem. rolleyes.gif

I am happy what sounded like a complicated problem, all problems not showing on diagnosis are complicated on modern cars, was solved by simply replacing a dated battery.

You must have neen very caring with your battery, since they ususally only last 1,5-3 years in LOS

And yet I never did take care of it, I think maybe I was extremely lucky.

This problem with cutting out started in Pattaya, after I had left the Fortuner for nearly 2 months, then I used it, but only in Pattaya city, but very little, I would say most of my journeys were stuck in traffic with aircon on, stereo on, lights on, etc etc.

The Fortuner has been a great Motor, I could show photos of me on the farm..................... real abuse.

It never missed a beat, I'll let you guys know of any problems....

Thanks again people...smile.gif

By The Way.................. Fortuner Rules. biggrin.gif

Good to hear it wasn't anything more serious.

Lets hope this new battery serves you just as well.

Yep the Fortuner is rocking, just came home after intimidating a few Farangs in small cars. smile.gif

Wicked !!
