im up in the big smoke on monday, any ideas of the best place to buy stereo speakers and security cameras?

Try the IT Mall at Fortune Town on Ratchadaphisek for both and on the MRT (Rama IX). Shop called "Amorn" is fine for speakers and systems and there are a plethora of shops selling security systems within that complex.

The next best is out at Rangsit and the large complex on the same side as Dun Muang - about 3 kms past it. They have full professional sound systems and amps as well as the security cameras. None are expensive by western standards.
